I recently had my Mdl 70 rebarrelled to 9,3 X 62, this is a 1953 date of manufacture rifle with to much drop for me, but it was my only centerfire for 35 years, and I was accustomed to mounting it low, more against my jaw instead of properly just below my cheek bone, in order to line the scope up. When it went into the safe (1990) I started hunting with rifles that fit better and now I do not want to go back to my old, not so good, habits. I want to use the original stock, so maybe one of these lace on leather cheek pads is the answer. I know Cabelas has them available for about $30, but I have heard more bad reports on theirs than good. Anyone aware of another source, better quality even at a higher price, may well equal a better value in the long run. Thanks, John SIC TRANSIT GLORIA MUNDI

John What I've done instead is build up the cheek area with moleskin layers and cover it with one of those cartridge holders. Otherwise search Beartooth Products and Brownell's web sites for ideas. Carter's Country in Houston has had leather add-on pads, and I use the buttpad "extensions" on my Remington rifles to acheive desired LOP. I think I saw cheek piece leather pads as well -- about 30 bucks. If you have a beard it can "hang" in the synthetic stuff, but I do okay with the cheek weld thing you're after. Not sure where in Texas you are... _______________________

BNagel, Thanks, I'll check in Carter's. I live in Cypress, so I'm by there occasionally. John SIC TRANSIT GLORIA MUNDI

I bought the Beartooth neoprene one from Cabelas that you can fit in different spacers to adjust height as I was not sure how much I needed. I was worried it would slip, but hunted with it all last seasons and no problems. Lou

Lou I slipped mine on my BDL stock sans the padding -- started it out on my custom 721 stock before I fiddled with moleskin layering. BTW, I use moleskin on the end of the leather padding to keep it from sliding on my clothing. _______________________
