i'll be the odd man and opt for a .308. i would consider it slightly more versatile, plus it would make a slightly bigger hole, and nothing substitutes for that.
to be honest, however, either would be a great choice.
Having had several of both calibers, I can tell you that I only currently own one, the .308. I just can't seem to part with that caliber. Mine is an Ultra Light Ruger MKII and I simply love that rifle. I liked the 7mm-08's I've had, but never as much as the old reliable 308.
I am looking at 2 new guns , the Remington 700 TI and the Kimber 84 Montana both are available in 7-08 and 308. I know that there is more bullet availability for the 308 than the 7. Heres my question I plan on using this gun for whitetail, caribou, mt goat, mule deer , maybe a sheep. I allready own a 300wsm and a 7rem mag , both are to heavy to be a MT gun so this one will fill the niche. What one would you pick and why, keep in mind long shots are a potential.
PS what grain bullet would you use for MT goat . I like the barnes t-x's .

I would go 7-08. There are just as many bullets available for the 7mm as .308. A 7-08 is going to recoil less in an ultra light rifle. For longer shots, the 7mm will give you higher BCs for the same weight bullet. For the game you are hunting, 160gr max. wt. bullets are more than enough.

This is one of life's easier quandries.... The difference between them for what you're doing is quite miniscule. Most likely one caliber has a certain feel to it for you, and you'll end up getting that one. No real rational way to decide. But just for fun, I would say that the 30 has many more bullets, but the 7 will hsoot same SD faster, and there's plenty of 7mm bullets to choose from. If you like plinking, the military 308 comes pretty cheap now and then, and could save you loads in fun bullets. I can't reload cheap enough to not n=buy milsurp (but I can't throw away brass! so there's one downside to the 308 - you end up with bags and bags of brass!) I like the 7mm-08. I would use 140g for any and all of it.

Here's another way to look at it: Same bullet weight: 7mm = better BC, 308 = faster bullet Same SD: 7mm = faster bullet, 308 more KE Best way is to toss a coin and get the 7mm-08.
