They are for shotguns. The term is a combination of "buck" (the male deer) and "shot" (a given multitude of projectiles in a shell). Like all shotgun shells there is a varience in weight and size. The lower the number, for shot, the bigger the diameter. The more common is 00 buckshot.

Buckshot loads for shotguns are intended to kill deer at very close ranges. Within 25 yards or less, it is marginally effective, BUT!! I have seen more deer that were shot with buckshot that escaped wounded than with any other kind of ammo.

Buckshot is still allowed in a few jurisdictions in the U.S. where driving deer with hounds is still permitted. However, the use of buckshot for deer hunting is against the law in most States of the U.S., as it should be! I would NOT DEPEND on buckshot to stop any dangerous animal like an African lion!!

As a self defense round against another human I suspect this is quite a stopper.....other than that I'd like to use something more like a 12 Ga slug.

For dangerous game I'd far prefer to use something along the lines of a 404 Jeffery.

I use quite a bit of 00 buck shot for culling goats,it works very well at ranges out to 30 yards.
I use it mainly when shooting from ATV/4 wheeler motoerbike when goats are running from the bike as i drive forestry roads,i would use it on deer as you will waste alot of meat as you don't really have much control of where pellets will hit a the animal.

Gidday Guys,

The Department of Conservation uses most of the buckshot 12guage here for culling deer, goats, thar and chamois from helicopters with Bennelli semi autos.

It is very effective when used at 15 - 20 yards when the animal has not a chance of outrunning a helicopter.

Not the most sporting but effective for killing large numbers quickly and efficiently.

Happy Hunting

Overkill, you've posted the same question in 6 different forums. Are you not getting enough information about buckshot or are you just forgetting that you've posted it already?
