Hi everyone, What kind of velocities can be reasonably achieved in a modern .30-30? Say in an Encore or Ruger #1? Obviously, it's silly to try to make a .30/06 out of a .30-30 (just buy an '06!), but I would assume that something can be safely gained. one of my favorite things to play with at the load bench... with W 748 powder and heavy bullets... say 220 grain round nose..seated to a cannulure in a chamber that will take the length of the round... 2100 fps in do'able with safe pressures if reloading the same cases 10 times and still having tight primer pockets is any indication.. with a charge of RL 7... 110 grain V Maxes and Sierra HPs, Hornady 110 SPs.. those can see 3000 fps..even in a lever action as the bullet is short enough to function... 125s can be run in the 2500 to 2700 fps range with several powders... as will the Speer 130 grain HP.. those are my favorite things to play with.. Win and Rem make strong cases, stronger than are usually give credit for.. I still don't know why I have just never bought a NEF in 30/30... I'd love to have an old Model 54 in 30/30 or a Model 30S in 30 Remington... I just love reloading that little case for some reason.... probably because they are cheap, nostalgic and capable more than they are given credit for..

The savage 340 is also a good one. My uncle gets 2400 fps from his handloads with 170 grainers.

I get close to 2900fps with the 125gr Sierra Prohunter SPT in my H&R 30-30AI using *H322, group shot at 100yds on one of my better days. *EDIT: Sorry, my bad for trusting my memory , I checked my records, powder is H322.

a-p, s-f, b-s & w-t, For all of your reasons - that's why a T/C Encore in 30/30 AI is #1 on my Short List of next purchases. Gotta hoard of .308" Remington 150 gr. Bronze Points that are gonna get first whack, too! After that; s-f's light-weight bullet list has peaked my interest also. Can't wait! Cheers, Number 10
