It's spare electrictians tape. I put a length over the muzzle to prevent water, mud, crud or whatever from getting into the muzzle.....................DJ

So you think Tape would have kept the mud out after dropping 28 feet.

How is it Safer pulling the rifle up through limbs 28 feet with a Cord?

It sure looks like you want to argue over ANYTHING. Fortunately I'm so amiable that just isn't possible.
A couple strips of electricians tape WOULD have prevented a bunch of crud from getting into the muzzle with a 28ft drop.
FWIW I always like to carry one of the OTIS pull through kits with me in a pocket. It has a tool that you can use to push out any obstruction if somehow one got in my muzzle or breech despite the tape.
The Stery Scout has a storage compartment just ahead of the rear magazine that you can store a pull through, patches an lube in. So with the Steyr you don't need the separate kit.
Obviously you UNLOAD your rifle before you pull it up by the cord. While being pulled up a loaded rifle is recipe for disaster. Take the bullet out of the chamber and close the bolt on a empty round. When you are up and situated work the bolt and you're ready to hunt. It just takes a few seconds to be safe, a few seconds that could save your life.
I'm really not trying just to argue. I really am concerned for hunters safety. Heck, if you'd promise to use it PM me your address and I'll SEND you some Paracord and Electricians tape at my expense. We agree and disagree on different things but you HAVE to agree that SAFETY is first and formost..........................DJ

Thank you for the nice offer. Actually, the rifle that dropped had Tape over the Muzzle and the impact just pushed through it. We Taped to keep the wind-blown Sand out of the Bores. Also carry a couple of extra wraps, just as you mentioned.
And a piece of "White" Sewing Thread is under the Tape extending out 5" or so. With the initial 4" Blackened with a Marks-A-Lot. I've found it works just as well as a Downy Feather to detect minute air currents.
And I have plenty of Rope<->Cable, just don't use it going up a tree with a rifle - since it is much better to simply keep the rifle with me, slung Butt up across my back.

But I do appreciate the offers. And I agree Safety is something we should all be concerned about.
