Thanks guys I was curious if the 175's would expand on deer. Today I made it to the range with my usual test media (one gallon jugs full of H2O standing upright) and found that at 40yds the 175 MagTip opened up to just under 0.5" and retained 134gr after zipping through six jugs. That'll do for our eastern whitetail

Rick, Even the 175 grain Remington Corelokt has done excellent results in my 7 x 57s. With the 7 x 57 and a 175 grain bullet, I don't think you have to get fancy with the bullets to achieve accurate and terminal results. It just plain works. Why change what has been giving you success? cheers seafire

I have used the Speer 175 rain Mag Tip to perfect satisfaction on deer. The 175 grain Hornady Spire point is accurate but have only shot a feral hog with it and it also worked fine. Actually I haven't found a bad 7MM bullet for my 7x57. Had good results with the 139 Hornady Spire pt, the 154 Hornady RN, the 160 Sierra BTSP and the 160 Speer Hot cor bullets. Mine was built to win the tough ugly rifle contest with a Ramline stock, rust brown Turkish mauser action and a stainless barrel painted camou to displease the eye. After I figured out how to properly bed the Ramline stock it shoots some loads under MOA. This is my miserable rainy day rifle and has killed a bunch of deer.

rick - please post your results with this bullet on deer. my first instinct is that it would be too heavy, not opening fast enough, but, since i ahve never used it for deer hunting, i would not be able to say for sure.

The 175 grain Mag Tip pushed to around 2450 out of my 19 inch barreled 7x57 would be my choice for an all around bullet. This was my backup rifle on a recent elk hunt, my main gun never missed a beat but a friends rifle went down so I let him borrow my 7x57. He took a running shot an an elk going down hill hitting it at the last rib on it's left side and the bullet ended up under the hide near the elks jaw looking just like the picture that all the manufacturers like to show. The bullet only hit ribs but penetrated a lot of elk, was mostly there but I didn't weigh it but I figure expanded diameter was no more than 50 caliber. On the three Texas deer I used it on it killed quickly and exited making exits no larger than an inch and destroying meat only when it hit bone. I shot a feral hog running a little far back (150 pounds), the bullet drove thru the pigs pelvis from broadside and exited. Oddly this pig was dead right there. I like this bullet!
