You may remember I was agonizing over which 308 to buy my son for elk season next year?

Well, I bought him a Sig SHR970 in 270...... Couldn't help it. New, with the hard case and everything, for $425. I have dies, brass and a pile of 130 gr. old style Silver Tip bullets, as well as a box of XLC's, so all I need for Christmas is a scope.

So much for careful planning! Oh, well, what was good enough for my first hunting rifle, ought to be good enough for him..... LOL! Dutch.

Ah a son's first big rifle. The 270 is always a good choice. It's a little better for varminting and youngsters have the energy to really go after that stuff.

Explain it to me again, Dutch. [Confused] I don't see the problem here! [Smile]

I think your son is going to LOVE his new 270. They are great, dependable rifles and I think one of the easiest rifles to shoot really well.

Of all the fellows I ever hunted with, the best shots were 270 users to a man. I always academically understood the 270 was a great cartridge but didn't fully appreciate some of its finer points till I got one a few years back. Now when I SERIOUSLY want to reach way out and hit something, I take the 270.

Good choice! [Smile]

No problems, other than the ones between my ears.....

I had wanted a short action, since he'll be hunting elk on his 12th birthday, and a short action brings the rifle balance back a little. But, he's 4'11" on his 11th birthday (takes after his dad, that way), so he'll be 5'3" on his 12th, or so. Hard to believe....... he was just learning to walk last year! Seems like, anyway.

In any case, the 270 will do it, with good bullets. Already having all the reloading stuff means there will be more ammo to practice with, which is more important than the rifle, anyway.

Just funny how plans can go awry when the right deal comes along. Dutch.

270 was my first gun too. No regrets ever about that purchase!
