Made up a switch barrel No.1 few years back and current barrel is for 22-250, 7 twist for the heavy bullets, shoots very well. With hunting season coming soon have the 348 barrel and going this coming Monday to retired 'smith/friend and we are going to switch out. Have 71/348 and it can have a pretty stout kick with moderate plus loads and would think the No.1 could take just about any load/bullet combo you wanted depending on your pain threshold. Initially will run jacketed bullets but sometime down the road will go with gas checked cast lead bullets and looking for a source of good cast bullets and load data as well. Any suggestions, sources, etc. out there??
All feedback appreciated.

Interesting beings I am currently interested in Ruger No 1's.

I keep batting about a No 1 in 45-70. But I would like the stainless more for using it. The stainless only comes in the shorter barrel length of 22 inch with the laminated stocks. But the walnut comes in the 26 inch that was a special Lispeys run of No 1's. If it was a 26 inch stainless I think it would be here in my safe already.

Decisions . . décisions . . .

Thanks for your information.

Purchased a Ruger No.3 in 22 Hornet years back and converted it to 45/70 Gov't w/ 22" much heavier barrel than the original No.3 from the factory. Recoil on that pencil weight factory 45/70 is fierce. The No 1's and 3's are easy to convert to about any caliber desired w/ obvious barrel switch, appropriate extractor, and perhaps some opening of the forearm barrel channel. There are still a fair number of No.1's on the used market that you may want to consider "building to suit." The No.3's are not that easy to find these days.

Thank you Instructor.

Yes that was my issue and thoughts too. Both in terms of weight and velocity improvement in the longer barreled No 1's.

I did consider having one re-barrelled too with a longer stainless barrel. But you know how it is - you hate to get into all that work to get i the way you want it before you really get to use it much.
