I have a Universal Firearms .30 Carbine that was left to me by my Grandfather. He bought it in the 50's or 60's as protection from a communist invasion. It looks unfired, and has a Western Field 4x scope on it. The scope touches the rear peep sight. I recently found a deal on 1000 cases and bullets, and thought this might be a fun 50-100 yd plinker. I had a M-2 carbine in VietNam, but it was fun because it had the full auto switch. I am thinking about replacing the scope with one of the opticle dot sights. I see these advertized from $30 to several hundred $. As an occasional plinker, I don't want to put alot into it, but I don't want a piece of junk either. Any thoughts? NRA Endowment Life Member

Do some research and you will find a couple of interesting things about the M1 Carbine. 1) NYPD Stake Out Squad had 100% one shot stops with the 110gr softnose bullets (very close range 3-5 yards) 2) A couple of good makers have handguard replacing scope mounts, they work great with red dot scopes.
