Never produced...it was closer to 20-25 years ago it was advertised. I heard two rumors, stories, whatever...first accuracy sucked, and secondly the action was not durable enough..wouldn't last long. It had A LOT of competition from the Springfield Armory M1-A. The M1-A was well established and fairly cheap way back then. Again, those are just rumors, stories I heard when I was in the gunshop business, don't know if they were true, or I should have put my boots on because of the brown stuff. Ruger has been notorius in advertising a new product and then either not producing it, producing it, but in low quantities or several months, years after announcement, and the worst, IMHO, is advertising at a price and by the time it reaches the market it has nearly doubled. The Gold Label comes to mind. Ruger's SxS was supposed to retail around 1200 or so, but they are now over 2K, if you can find one.

Yes, it was produced in very limited quantities and were recalled from dealers(very few dealers)for dealer friend of mine while living in Alaska claimed he had one for a very short period of time. Story was, if I recall properly, was that the receiver casting was not to spec.?? Was also told that some dealers refused to return without being paid a premium?? Ruger & Co. would probably have someone that would discuss whether all of this rumor is fact or fiction. Might point out that the current price of the SXS shotgun i.e., Gold Label is retailing at some $3200.00 and again, story is that initial version has been cancelled and to be reintroduced in the future. Supposedly upper levels of management in Ruger and their close supporters have been able to get them, but damn few.

What a mess Why would Bill Ruger not proceed with this great idea? Im sure he could have made it work!! Look at the M1A. Just beef up the mini receiver put on a heavier barrel and adjust the gas system voila a good gun right! Well He didnt like the aftermarket hi capacity clips for the mini As I recall. Maybe he wouldhave had another law suit in the making. Did Ruger get a lawsuit filed against them in that FBI shootout in Miami in the mid 80s. The one with the MINi 14 killing 2 and wounding many FBI? Did they make the factory folding Mini very long? They go for a lot now.
