The .338 Federal will survive just fine like the .308 has. After all, it was a wildcat from many years as a .338-08, until Federal named it the .338 Federal. While I don't have a .338 Federal rifle, it's quite a nice little cartridge. I have seen a few moose hunters using it in Alaska.

I can't think of a reason to own or operate a .338- o8 cartridge when I can use a .338- 06 cart. E especially up here.

That's a good point, but there are a lot of people who have shot the .308 for years and years, and like the .338 Federal.

Its simple really. If u like short, trim, handy, perhaps on the lighter side rifles then the short cartridges are great. They fill that niche. If you don't care what you pack or like to err to the more traditional rifles... like a longer, heavier rifle chambered in the traditional 06 family or belted mags they get the job done too. Its not the cartridges you should compare I believe but what package they come in...as it were. Fact is that in any way you measure them they do exactly the same thing and the game can't tell the difference. Dead is dead no matter if by 308 win or 30-06 Springfield. I hope the 338 Fed lives on, I think its a dandy cartridge and has a place in a short action non magnum role.
