Straight pull rifles in Africa?

Saw a demonstration with a straight pull bolt rifle, and the thing was VERY quick to cycle. Made me think why aren't these popular for safaris when speed of consecutive shots is vital. Is it the price? Are they not reliable enough? Does the system not work safely with large caliber rounds?

Thousands upon thousands of ele have been prof. killed/culled with straight pull self-loaders
often being the primary weapon of choice.

and the S-P bolt repeater rifles I viewed at SCI were quick!
Those examples had steel balls spaced on the radial diameter of the bolt, which then protruded
when the bolt was closed, thus acting as the locking method.
__Spherical or round locking surfaces are nothing new to the Europeans.
The Germans used a roller lock bolt in its famous MG42, and the extremely highly regarded modern
H&K companies variants of its G3 and MP5, also use a roller locking action.

I was interested in modern Mauser -96 straight pull at the local,
But the front locking six-lug bolt locked into the barrel itself,
So one just can't get your favourite smith to change the tube to a krieger if desired.

The straight pull rifles are becoming more evident in Africa every time I go. My Blaser has been twice, both years since I acquired one, and has performed flawlessly on 2 buffalo and numerous plains game animals.

Ditto with me, I've taken a Blaser to Africa 3 times now , and taken buff as well as plains game with them. Every trip there I have seen other hunters with a Blaser as well.

They do work well in Africa!!no,issues with reliability or accuracy. I've got BLasers in calibres upto 500J , and always take either a 375 or 416 variant with me.

My Blaser ahd been to Africa four times..Two ele and one lion later they are great. Plus I have a very compact case and three down and one in the chamber gives one a very good amount of ammo. I also use it here as I have four different caliber barrels.

Good to know! Why didn't I ever come across a trophy photo with one of these? Always a bolt action or a double Smiler
