Quote: Your 280 will do everything a 7x57 will do, with just a tad more recoil. Expect between 150-200 FPS more from your 280 in equal bullet weights and barrel lengths. The 7x57 will start to catch up with the 280 in short barrel lengths, less case capacity and a little more effiecient powder burn. If it was me I would prefer the 280 with a 22-24" barrel, and it does well in 160-175 gr bullets. In the 7x57 I like a shorter barrel 20-22" and 140 gr bullets are excellent. Either cartridge can use heavier or lighter bullets, but the above are ideals for me. Others may disagree just my personal preference.

Cannot say enough good about the 7x57mm. One year here in Texas I took all five, full bag limit, of white tails with a featherweight M70 and 140 grain factory ammo. All were one shot kills. Now I am working on tuning a Steyr M-72 with 160 grain bullets for the next season. The 7mm Mauser is a great cartridge!! LLS
