358 Win. vs 350 Mag.

In a 18 or 19 inch barrel does the Rem. Mag. have much over the 358 Win.? I looked in all my reloading books but all speeds are from longer barrels. Does anyone have some experience with these in the shorter barrels? If there is no practical difference I plan on a new barrel for the old 243 I have.
Thanks
Jim

In the same length bbls the 350 RM will have slightly higher velocity. However you will have to change the bolt face to fit the magnum case, and the belted case might cause feeding problems. The 358Win would be a simple barrel change.
I have had Remington mod7's in 18" and 20" bbls [including a 350Mag that never did feed 100%], it is hard to tell the difference between the two. A 20" 358Win would be a hard combo to beat.

I have a .358 I love. The brass is readily available for real cheap, and it is a tack driver.
I'm getting under a 3/4 " group at a hundred with WC 872 /with 5 gr. 3031 kicker, and about a 1 1/2 inch group with 4895 at 2050 with cast bullets., I've got some groups at 2350 with cast at about four inches, and I'm sure with a bit of work, I'll be able to shrink this some more.

in an 20 inch tube (that's my shortest of my 3 358s) i loose ZERO on the book loads for the 350 rem.
It's a quick rebarrel from 243 to 358. and if you happen to have a savage 110 or 10, there's a barrel for sale on midway CHEAP for 358.

I get 2500+ with 225 gr sierras over win 748 out of a 20" pipe.

My 20" barrel 358 BLR gets 2400 fps with a 250 gr bullet. My 20" barrel Mauser in 350 Rem Mag gets 2650 fps with 250 gr bullets. FWIW - Dan

From my Tikka that I had rebarreled by Pac-Nor to .358 Win, I get an average of 2520 fps with 225 grain Partitions out of a 600mm(23.6") barrel. I could get more but this load is very accurate and gives me all I need.

Dan what load are you using with the 250's ? I 've had several rifles of both calibers. I get 2350 with .250 speers out of my 20" BLR over a heafty charge of 748(taken from Barnes manual) You will get more from the .350 mag but consider recoil and bringing the rifle out of recoil back on target when shooting game. By the way can you rebarrel a model 7 SS to .358 with a slender taper bbl. ? who could do the work without costing an arm and a leg ?

.358, give Dan at Montana Rifle Company a call or send him email for a quote.

I'm have a M7 being rebarrelled right now by them. I found their work to be satisfactory and there price as good or better than most. Plus their turnaround time was fairly short. (FYI, I'm doing a 338-08 not a 358win).

Generally speaking, a small case like the .358, operating at the same pressure levels as a magnum of the same bore diameter, will lose less velocity for every inch of barrel that is cut off than the magnum case will. In other words, the smaller case gets more FPS per grain of powder burned than the bigger case does. Therefore, the smaller case will give as much velocity as the magnum case at some barrel length. However, whether this will happen at 18" or 16" or 14" is something that one has to determine by experimentation, since all guns are individuals. However, it is probably possible to predict the barrel length where this should happen by using an internal ballistics calculation program. In your example, there is not too much difference between the .350 and the .35 Whelen, and both of these aren't really that much ahead of the .358 Win.!!
