Crazyhorse, I don't disagree with you, I just think most of these discussion need to have boundries or someone will get the idea that a 100 gr. bullet a 2000 FPS is fine for elk, and it may be under perfect circumstances..I have killed way too many Coues and Mule deer with a 22 L.R. to argue the point and too many elk and deer with my beloved 25-35 to tell you that your wrong. But for the average Joe your talking about who hunts once a year I would recommen nothing less than a 100 gr. 25 caliber bullet at 2800 FPS, as an ideal deer load for anyone. For elk and the same guy I would suggest a 180 gr. 30-06 at 2700 FPS, not 2000. Then things really get complicated when you take into consider terrain, hunting condition, weather elements, and a hundred other things that make choosing a proper caliber difficult..The easy way to accomplish this without failure is to "USE ENOUGH GUN"... I agree with the boundaries, but, this is posted on the Medium Bores tropic area, and by the definition of the area, 27 to 366 calibers. The boundaries are there, the .257 and .264/6.5 chamberings are by definition of the topic area not included. My question deals strictly with the calibers that fall inbetween .277 and .366, from the 270 thru the various 9.3 chamberings. So, with that in mind, and including your responses, the medium bore chamberings pushing the bullets that are available commercially, at velocities between 2200 and 2800 FPS, still can and do reliably kill game. Not meaning to come across as flippant in my response, but within the parameters listed by this topic area, super bullets and light speed velocities are not really going to do anything different than what these calibers have been doing for decades at the velocities I listed. Even the rocks don't last forever. | |||
