Looking to load up some 300 savage in 150 gr for my wife to use this season. Anybody have a good load using Rl-15 or Varget? Was thinking about using the 150 Barnes TSX...any thoughts or experience with that combo? Will be shooting a Savage 99. Thanks for any input or suggestions! Cheers

The .300 Savage is not the fastest gun in the west by a long shot......and the monos are really meant for higher velocity cartridges. I'd be sticking with such standbys as Nosler partitions and Hornady Interlocks in the .300 Savage. They cost less and are totally adequate at those velocities. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." The 150 TSX is actually one of the few mono-metals that was designed for relatively low velocity. Barnes states in their new manual that this bullet was designed for the 30-30, so as long as you keep the pressures mild, the bullet should work fine. But it wouldn't be my first choice for the 300 Savage 99. I agree with Vapodog that the old standbys work fine. One of my favorite bullets for moderate velocities is the Remington corelokt.

I guess I should clarify that Barnes has both a boattail and flatnose 150 tsx. The flat tip is the one I was referring to.

Ok...thanks for the suggestions...might take a run over to Sportsman's and see what might be lurking on the .308 shelf. Wouldn't mind saving a couple of $$'s on bullets. Cheers!

Kreten 150 gr Hornady spire pts and IMR 4895 work very well in my old 99. Check your hornady manual and don't try to load right up to the max. a couple grs back from max works just fine.

I used 43gr of Varget behind 150gr Corelokts which killed a couple of deer very dead. I think the Corelokts would be more suited for the velocities that the .300 Savage would generate. But I was using a Rem Classic --a bolt gun. In your 99, you might want to back off a couple of grains.
