I did not get either the BRNO 7X57 or the Ruger #1 .270. Instead I got an action to build my .257 Roberts improved. Ever herd of a hawthorn 760 ? Well I had'nt till i saw one at the gunshow today. It amounts to mongomery wards version of the Sears JC-higgins. It is now a 30,06. There are a few improvments over my higgins. 1st the action is the FN supreme with the sako trigger and the side safty. Also the hinged floor plate has a much better latch then my Higgins or my origional FN. My Smith is going on vacation for a couple weeks but when he gets back, I will have him the action and order the barrel, probably a Douglas premium. I will go 24 inch tapperd to .600 at the muzzle. I also met a stock guy at the show who had some real nice stuff on dispay. 3 turned stocks for the FN, but none that really suited me. I think I will go with somthing shaped like a Remington mouintain rifle. It will all take a year or more but in the end I will have an excelent rifle chamberd for a great cartridge. ...tj3006 freedom1st

Thomas, Good choice. I just had a standard 257 Roberts built and used a Douglas Premium barrel on it also. Haven't sorted it out completely for loads, however the one load I tested using 75 grain bullets shot two shots in the same hole and the third shot 7/16 to the left at 100 yards, using a 4x scope. Not too shabby!! Gotta find a heavier bullet that shoots now. Mine is on a Rem 700SA. But, my rifle battery is comprised of mostly Mauser actions. You'll have a great rifle with the action you have. Dmb, i bet you will be very happy with your new rifle. I cam close to buying an old 722 remington (short action) for my project but I just like FNs. I have 2 rifles chamberd for the standard Roberts , and I will recomend a few loads to try if you don't mind. With 100 grain balistic tips my favorite powders are IMR-4350 IMR-4064 and and H-414. I have a couple pet loads of the 100 grain barnes tripple shock over 46 H-414 and and a 120 Noslre partition over 42 grains of IMR-4350. A 100 grain balistic tip over 44.5 grains of IMR 4350 is well under MOA with both my rifles. Hope this info helps although it reall should be in the small bore thread...tj3006 freedom1st

Thomas, Thanks for the load advice. I have a second 257 Roberts also, a Ruger 77 Mk II. I've only tested one load in it, 45 grains of H-4350 with 100 grain Nosler Partitons. The load shot 3 shots into a 9/16" group at 100 yards with a 4x scope. Did a trigger swap on the Ruger with no other rifle mods. Gotta love the 257's!!! Take care, Don

257AI? Try 50 grains of IMR 4350 under a 100 grain NBT. Makes them little blue tipped missiles hit the same hole.

Thomas, I think you have found a super action and the project is an exciting one. While I think the world of the .257 AI as you know, I would really consider a 6.5/06 plain vanilla or AI on a long action. On .366torque's load, That's a big ten four Member NRA, SCI- Life #358 28+ years now! DRSS, double owner-shooter since 1983, O/U .30-06 Browning Continental set.

.308 Sako I must say there is nothing at all wrong with you choice of cartridge sugjestions ,I already have a 6.5X57 (I like it)I just love the .257s for deer size game and if I want to shoot somthing bigger I will go way up in bore size. By the time they put my carcus in the ground I will likly own a dozen rifels in 257 bore and mabye a bunch more in any round based on the 7X57 mauser case...tj3006 freedom1st
