I have a 2.5x8 scope on the way for the featherweight,What other quick detach mounts will work besides weaver? Will the warne bases & rings work? Will low rings still clear the bolt or will medium be the way to go?Does anyone have Quick detach mounts on there featherweight? What are you guys sighted in with as far as bulets & loads go?I shoot the Hornady custom 165sp.interlok in my other 308.Great accuracy.Have also shot great groups with the federal 180gr.nosler.in a win.compact.

The mounts on the pre 64 in the picture on page 1 are Weaver Extension rings! While these may be called "low" they are about mediums as compared to the Weaver Tip Off's. The reason that extension rings had to be used is that the Leu 2-7 on there is too short between the objective flare and the power ring. Thus the extension ring is on the rear bridge set backwards to reach forward and clear the power ring. One of the reasons for this is that Weaver tip off rings are rather long. Keep in mind that Weaver bases can be reversed on the receiver bridges and this allows the rings to be mounted forward or to the rear, as needed, of each receiver ring. I just looked at the Leupold site and the ring spacing for the 2-7 is 5.2" and the 2.5-8 is 5.1" so there is a potential conflict here. The Weaver Tip Off's are not quick detachable. There are many quick detachable rings that will fit the Weaver bases. One of these is the Leupold QRW. Watch out for some of these rings as they are not a 50/50 split and can mar the finish on your new scope. The ring that's more than 180 degrees can be opened some and then the screws will close it again and the ring will go over the scope without scratching it. I forgot now if your 70 has the low comb or not if it does then I think you would be happier with a fancy quick detachable ring setup. You might even start another topic as to what are the best ones. The more I look at this I see a fork in the road. Either your going to have a drawer full of rings and bases like I do or have a gunshop fit some mounts for you. Stay there while they figure it out. That's the hard part it seems.

According to Dr Kam Nasser in his excellent article "The Model 70 Winchester 1936-1963 a history of its halcyon years" (for which he won the 8th Townsend Whelen award in 1974) the .308 was introduced by Winchester in the featherweight (and the featherweight was introduced in .308 Win) in 1952. Other calibres were introduced later. All featherweights has 22" barrels. The article lists the .308 Win as also available in standard weight and supergrade. it also says that the 24" barrel in the supergrade was only available on special order. I have a featherweight in .308 Win that is all standard right down to the aluminum butt plate and wouldn't change it for the world. Regards, Magnum

I use Leupold QRW on just about all of my Pre-64 M70's (from 7x57 to 458 Win Mag, and many calibers in the middle). They have served me very well. Tim
