This one has been bothering me for awhile, what exactly is the .338 Excalibur? I understand that it is in the same ball park as the .338-378 Weatherby, .338 Lapua, etc. but other than that I know squat about it. Seems like it would be a pretty good long range cartridge.

My A-Square book is still in a box somewhere so I can't speak to specifics. But... If I recall correctly, the .338 Excalibur is a monster of a .338 cartridge that designed to shoot heavy .33 caliber bullets a long way. Art Alphin didn't event it - someone he worked with did - but A-Square did sell rifles so chambered. I *believe* it used a proprietary cartridge case, but as best I remember, it was pretty close to a .338 Lapua or 338-378 Weatherby. Definitely a long range hunting cartridge. The 338 Excalibur was intended as a replacement/rebarrel option for rifles originally chambered in 378 & 460. It shares the same rim diameter sans the belt, thus it has more case capacity. It can launch 200 grain bullets in excess of 3500f/s and 250's at 3200f/s without exceeding 62,000 psi according to F.C. Barnes.

Think 338-416 Rigby Improved, or 338-378 Improved with the belt turned off. - dan "Intellectual truth is eternally one: moral or sentimental truth is a geographic and chronological accident that varies with the individual" R.F. Burton
