On the subject of barrel weights guys one thing to keep in mind. Is that most all tube makers have thier own definition of what a 3 or a 4 weight is.

What I am saying is that just because you like say a 3 from company x that you may not like a 3 from company y.

I've learned that the easiest way to let the smith how you want the tube to feel is to go by shank dia and muzzle dia.

Just something to think about.

Allen,
I would agree with your post if he was asking about buying a new rifle. In that case the .338 Mag makes all the sense in the world. If he just wants a low cost medium bore made from his .270 then the 338/06 makes sense to me. No it is not a .338 but it will still make a nice versatile rifle. I do agree on the Ackley version.
