Guys,

Any experience with the 270 gr Speer 9.3 bullet on small game like white tails?

The larger .375 diameter 235s have the reputation of being a little to fragile for the purpose and the even larger .416 diameter 350 Mag Tips have the reputation of being a bit too sturdy. Any field experience with the 270 gr 9.3 projectile?

I have used the 270 Speer in my 9,3x74R double rifle on a few deer and pigs with excellent results. I have recovered only one bullet that was shot into a 300=lb pit at a pretty good angle from about 27 yards as he ran away from me. He dropped at the shot. I did shoot him in the head with my 44 for a coup de gras.
From my notes:
Bullet traveled through about 3" of gristle plate [due to the extreme angle of the shot],through shoulder, broke neck, found in rear of jaw.
Retained weight 221.4gr.[82%],max expansion .925", minium expansion .708", length .655".
The bullet looks picture perfect.
I would not hesitate to use this bullet on any game up to the size of Elk.
My velocity is 2390fps.

I have found them way to soft for my liking...and I blew up a few of them before I quite using them....but I get a lot of velocity out of my 26" barrel and hot handloads...

I found the 286 gr. Noslers, and the 320 gr. RN Woodleigh to be my hunting bullets...I have some very accurate 250 NOsler Bal. Tips but have not used them except on one deer...

I also love the 230 gr. GS Customs monolithic H.P. on anything with hair, but they are not too great on delivery apparantly...I have a stock on hand, so its not a problem with me....I would shoot a Cape Buffalo with this bullet and expect an exit hole...

I have shot some large roo's with the 270 gr speer 9.3 bullet, and had full penetration and smashing of spine and hip bones which are heavily constructed in larger roo's, and IMHO it is perfect for that and would be perfect for whitetail deer which I think would even be of lighter structure than a large male Kangaroo. There is no need for woodleigh's, Barnes X etc. on thin skinned game. Buy the 270 gr speers and shoot your deer you will have excellent results, as well as saving a few bob. They shoot well in my cz lux 9.3 as well, I use them with Lapua Brass, wlr primer and 56 gr of AR2208.

If you shoot larger game then yes the speer may be a little soft and the move to the woodleigh bullets Ray suggested.
