A local shop has a Savage Stainless/Synthetic 308 Patriot, reloading dies, and 100 rounds of brass for sale on their used rack. They've had the rifle for some time and are getting anxious to move the package at a "good" price and are looking for offers. The rifle is in "as new" condition, and 80 rounds of the brass are unfired. My Question is ...What is a good price? What are the advantages/disadvantages to the Lazzeroni vs my 300Wmg's? Any comments would be appreciated. Ron

If you already have one hot .30 caliber, the Lazzaroni is redundant. Yeah, I know, there are those True Believers who think that somehow the beltless case will turn you from a mere hunter to some sort of Nimrod, Mighty Hunter Before the Lord. Bah! Higher velocity only gets you a few more yards of point blank range at the cost of more recoil and muzzle blast. Do you already use your Winnie at the maximum range on a regular basis? If not, my bet is the reason that gun has sat there a long time is that your local friends are catching on. Velocity is/was/will be forever pure HYPE. Lazzaroni is a nice guy. I've met him but what he pitches, I don't catch. Wah-Hey!

To play devil's advocate here, and maybe help you sort thru your decision, the Lazzeroni will do what your Win Mag does, with heavier bullets. For shooting whitetails, not sure you have much advantage over a 308 at most common ranges. If you're wanting to hit something hard, then a 220g from the Patriot will do it.

The 220 gr RN is the same length as a 200 gr SP so they both have to be set as deeply in the case. You honestly believe that an extra 10% in bullet weight makes a significant difference when the velocity is nearly the same?

New the rifle is $400, the dies are $100 and the brass is $2 apeice. That is what Lazzaroni was clearing out the rifles for last month, I think those numbers are pretty close. I had bought one and thought it shot pretty well, the trigger is pretty tough. Good luck! Shayne

I understand the arguements for speed and being able to heave a heavier bullet longer and flatter than the Winnie at the cost of my shoulder and some more carbon dust to clean up... but if Shayne's prices are correct than it it easy to see why the rifle and components have sat in this shop for over a year at a price of $650. Nah unless they come off that number a bunch I'll stick with my three shot one hole punchers in a Tikka WTHunter and a Savage 116. Thanks guys I appreciate the input. I was looking at the Patriot for a 5-6-700 yard unique situation shot where I hunt. But it looks like I'd be better off belly crawling half that distance across a bald pasture for a sure kill shot on this monster critter I've patterned... or finding something with a radar controlled trigger!LOL!
