Now this one IS posted to initate some responses;

anyone out there shoot an old 33 Winchester?

How many of the Euro Guys even know what it is?

If you got one, would love to hear about it.

That and the 40/65 for some reason are the two at the top of my personal popularity list for the old Heavy Winchester 1886 lever actions.

I load my 338/06 each year for deer season to the 33Winchester specs with Hornady's 200 gr FP.
Just a little nostalgia, back in the days when deer were not as " bullet proof" as they are today ( since everyone things you need a 500 winchester or weatherby magnum to take a 100 lb deer) [Confused] [Mad]

My neighbor has one of those. I haven't shot it yet though. I always though it would be a great round in a Winchester hi-wall. I see the 1886s at gun shows periodically. It should be a crackerjack round for deer and ekl (yes, ekl - Adam spelled it wrong [Wink] ).

Live well

A number of them.
But the .35 Winchester has a higher chance of being encountered here; Belgian double rifles used to be chambered for it, e.g.
Both are very decent and unjustly forgotten cartridges. The Finnish 9,3 x 53 R and its Russian twin, the 9 x 53 R, quite well correspond to them.

seafire you keep coming up with my favorite play toys my main hunting rifle for the area here in VA is an 86, 24" round bbl and full mag with the shotgun butt, I cheat and use the 338 caliber 210 grain spiter as the first round out followed by the 200 grain hornaday.
carcano91, I understand the Russian round can be found in converted Nagants, have you ever seen one or worked with one?

David James:

Keep coming up with your favorite toys?

Must be those Virginia roots of mine. On the VA/WVA border is where my world started out.
Family is from the WVA side, of the line, but I pretty much grew up in VA ( back when people in Arlington and Fairfax, spoke English and spoke it with a Drawl). When we the high school, band played the National Anthem at Football games on Friday night and never missing a Beat broke into Dixie, and everyone screamed and cheered. Dixie had more patriotism than the National Anthem.

And love the 33 Winchester you described. Take care of that old Gal, she is a keeper. I am seriously going to get around rebarreling a Marlin 45/70 into one with a 26 inch barrel one of these days.

I load my 338/06 at times with the 200 Gr FN at 2400fps to simulate the old 33 Winch.

Good luck out there this huntin' season Bud! [Big Grin] [Cool]

My 338 Mag loaded with cast lead or the 200 grain FP (33 Win Bullet) does wonders with velocities in the 33 Winchester range.
As a man once said to me, "Dead is dead."

I have seen and handled one, but did not buy it alas. The Winchester M 1895 was rechambered for it too. The Russians use the 9 x 53 R in a variety of single shots, combined guns and at least three self-loading rifles.

Actually the .33s are my favorite 86s. I have two a 98% T/D thats too valuable to use & a long mag, cresent butt thats 70&, I'd love to use it more to but I'm a dog man at the camp & boy those 86s get heavy for carrying!
