I am looking for a new scope for my 280. I have been looking at the Burris Fulfield II in a 4.5x14x42. Any thoughts on this scope. Thanks

I also vote for leupold.
This is just my opionion, here but I think you are getting to much magnifacation. It seems the fasion these days, but I siply can not understand why anyone needs anything more than a 3x9 for big game hunting.
I have 20 some rifles and only one has a 4.5x14. It is a nikkon buckmaster with the side focas. its on a 26 inch 25,06 with a heavy thumb hole laminate stock I built with a specific type of hunting in mind.

My favorits scopes ar 2 leupold 2.5X8s
and the less expensive 2x7s. Great scopes, for shooting big game.
I really think an adjustable objective on a game rifle is a negative.
thats why I only have one, and it is the one I mentioned wih the side focus.
Put a 300.00 vx2 3X9 on your 280 , and you will have all the scope you need to shoot any game animal out to the usfull rnge of the cartridge, and all you have to do is look throuh it, no reaching out to the end of the scope to bring it into focas...tj3006

I agree. I have several 280 and 280 based wildcats. A 3x9 is all I've needed. I have both Leupold and Burris. The Burris seems a little brighter and my last several scopes have been Burris.

As usual just my $.02

all brands of scopes are wonderful...until something goes wrong with them. Then Leupold is wonderful, since they are made in this country, guess where they get fixed...for the first or the one hundred and first owner. Most other brands are glued together w/space age epoxy...can't be taken apart and repaired.

As far as scope magnification going up over the years, before WWII most rifles had a receiver sight on them. Then 2X to 3X was the norm. You can't hit what you can't see...ask anybody on this forum over 35...they probably wear glasses.

I'm over 35. In fact I'm over 55. To tell the truth, I'm over 60. For hunting my favorite scopes are 2 3/4x and 1-4x. I can see well enough to shoot well to 300yds with them. What's more important, I can see great in low light and up close. Also, they ride low on the rifles and don't disrupt the handling. I've got some 3x9's and even a new 4-12 on a long range rifle. I don't hunt with them much tho. Other than varmits and preditors. I believe that if some could figure out a way to mount the Hubble telescope on a 5# 22 hornet, they'd do it!

You can go variable, but I agree on too much magnification. I use a straight Leupold 4x on my Rem 700 270 win. Plenty of magnification for big game. If I was in the market for another scope I would look at the leupold low power variables, nothing higher than 6x.

The only Burris I ever owned snapped a reticle so no more Burris for me. All of my rifles wear Leup. VXIII except my .280. I have a LEUP. 3x-9x compact on it. I see little reason in adding the extra weight for a minimal gain in magnification for hunting. I've never had to pass a shot on big game animal due to lack of mgnification. Sure, the 4.5x14 on my .260ai is nice at the range but the rifle already weighs 9.5# so adding another 1#+ means little for a bench rifle.

I've used 4-12 power scopes and never use them for the full potential. I really find it difficult to justify anything other than a 3-9 power scope and am also finding the old 4 or 6x fixed scopes cost as much as a variable.

In short, a 3-9X scope is fully adequate and there are a slug of them out there.

I have a Leupy 3-9 ultralight that I dearly love.....I wish I had a dozen more!

I have a 280 being made on a mauser action right now. When finished, it will have either a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x scope or a Leupold VX-II 2-7x. Those power ranges are ideal for hunting. I have killed game out to 400 yards & have never had the power turned past 6x. No need for me to carry the additional weight of higer power glass.
