So I want to hear some professional opions on some things.

Lets say a guy has a Remington magnum action that came off a Sendero rifle, previous life was 7mm Mag. And he wanted to build the action into a REALLY accurate medium caliber rifle that is still capable of being hunted if desired.

There are a couple choices out there...308 of course, but why should I own another .308" caliber rifle. 338 Lapua!!! Now we all know the cartiridge is very capable of some long range accurate shooting in the right hands. And people are starting to put that Lapua cartridge into the remmy actions. But is it a safe thing to do grinding that metal down that thin? OR can the 338RUM hold its own against the 338 Lapua? It would go into the action easier, but is it as accurate?

I had a few lefty Rem 700 338RUM's drop in my lap from an estate sale. So I went the route of the poor mans 338LAPUA. DAMN happy I did. You can find the brass for a little under a buck and they can be damn accurate. Mine is!

Any details on the build? I seen your post before and im really jealous of your rifle. I would love to have a Lapua on my remmy action, but im scared the metal will be cut too thin and give my bolt a short life span.

There are no flies on the 338 RUM. I had one done by Brown Precision on a worked Rem 700 action, and it would shoot 1/4 to 3/8ths on a regular basis with Remington factory 250gr Swift A-Frame ammunition. With a good barrel, solid bedding, and a good crown, just experiment with loads until you get it right where you want it.

I'm surprised you can fit a Lapua in a Remington Magnum action. I have a friend who wants to build Reington knock-offs in 338 Lapua and he's making the action several inches longer than a Rem. mag action.

So, tell me what you had to go through to make it fit.

From what I have been told, the bolt face has to be opened up a good bit to fit into a remmy magnum action. It can be done, but the metal is pretty thin. Which is what scares me about going Lapua, and why im think of going with the 338RUM instead.

My Rifle is set up with a Seekins detachable box magazine that excepts a over all loaded leenght of 3.9". The bolt face has be opend up a tad for the Lapua's rim size and a bit ground off of the bolt stop if one wants to load to a longer lenght than the spec 3.6"

ANyone used one of these bolts offered by Midway?

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewP...productNumber=218321

Already ready to accept the Lapua and its a pretty nice looking bolt too boot! I would have a custom handle put on it cause I dont like that one pictured. But if this is a safe alturnative I would probably go with the Lapua over the RUM.

Also has anyone ever taked a Remmy 700 action with the hinged floorplate, and turned it into a drop box magazine action? If I was going Lapua I would rather have a drop box, over the stocked internal magazine.

You may want to consider the 338 Edge, a 300 RUM necked up to 338. The longer case supposedly will give you Lapua preformance at less cost for brass. Check out www.longrangehunting.com for there information on all three 338 cases.

Im not too familiar with the Edge case, but at the same time I hear all the talk about people claiming it can be as nice as the Lapua. But I dont like claims of performance. I know the Lapua is a performance case and its been proven many times over. So if I can go with the Lapua on my Remmy 700, I will.

No one used that bolt offered by Midway? Seems like a good option if it works well.
