Hello all, I am thinking of another rifle project. I can get my hands on an MRC SS LH action with the large bolt face. I have been serioulsy considering a .358 Norma Mag. or possibly a .358 STA...any thoughts as to this idea?

Are you resigned to the 35 caliber?....are wildcats an option?

Since you're looking outside the mainstream, of the two my preference would be the .358 Norma based on my own experiences. However, in that power range, if I was looking for something unique, I would probably go with the 9.3x64 Brenneke.

Sorry to step on your toes, or perhaps tail, Cobra, the 9.3x64 won't work. You can make the bolt face larger, but it's difficult to make it smaller. The action should be very good as-is, so one of the last things I would want to do, if I owned it, would be to go messing with the bolt face and feed rails.

If the choices are limited to 35 caliber, either of the 358 Norma or the 358 STA is workable. MRC makes the magazines two different lengths. If the action has the standard magazine - go with the 358 Norma. If the magazine is the long one, go with the 358 STA.

I think the 358 STA is a wildcat, and for all practical purposes the Norma is too, so I'm thinking wildcats are an option for you. If so, then a good choice would be the 9.3mm based either on the 338 WM brass or the 8mm Rem Mag brass. The choice depends on the magazine length.

You're right, I stand corrected. Doing too many things at once, should have been paying attention. Big Grin Big Grin

I'll say .358 STA one because it has a little more power. Two the 8MM Rem Mag brass you use to make it is reasonable and readily available. The reforming process is very simple.
