If I was going to build a rifle, I would look at a .30 Hart.

Most people will probably find my choice pretty boring. I have owned several 300 magnums of one kind or another. Really like the Remington 700's, especially the 700 Classic or the 700 XCR.

I used to own a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 chambered in 300 H&H. It was a great gun and shot well. But it was too heavy and I did not like that 26 inch barrel.

I had a 300 Win Mag in a standard Remington 700BDL. It shot great, I wish I had not sold it.
But, that was the glossiest stock I ever owned.

Currently I own two 300 mags. One is a Remington 700 Classic chambered in 300 Wby Mag.
I restocked it with an H-S Precision glass stock and it is a nice rig. It has a 24 inch barrel and wears a Leupold 4.5-14X40 LR scope.

The other one is a Remington 700XCR that I bought last year. It is chamberd in 300WSM and it simply feels lighter than it is. It is very quick to point and just feels good. I really like that stock and recoil pad. It also has a 24 inch barrel. It wears the same 4.5-14 power Leupold. (They both have the Boone and Crockett reticle which really works.)

So, I guess my preference is for a 700 Remington in a standard weight with a 24 inch barrel.

Very simple for me, Kimber 8400 Montana in 300 WSM.
24in. barrel, Talley Lightweight ring/bases,Nikon 3x9x40 7lbs 2oz. loaded w/neoprene sling.

Surprisingly soft shooting for a lightweight gun in a snappy recoiling caliber.

My pet 300 is an H&S takedown scoped with a Swarovski 2.5x10x42 PH scope in Talley mounts. It is very handy for travel and shoots factory Federal ammo into 1/2 inch.

Back about ten years ago Winchester had a limited run of stainless and wood featherweight and as a departure from the norm they chambered them in .300 Win. I thought about buying one at the time and didn't Now I have a real use for one of these and am really kicking myself.

I wish I could get my hands on one now. Anyway I do like my Ruger #1 in .300 Win. Shoots half inch @ 100 yds but took alot of tweeking to get it there.

I am a .300 Win Mag shooter too. Love the 2 I have. 1 is a pre-64 Win. M-70. The other is a Sako. Both great! Nothing wrong with .300 Win. Mag. But if I was going to build a .30 mag rifle, I would get a .30 Hart built by Bobby Hart. A friend has one and it is a truly amazing rifle!!!

This is the only pic that I have that even shows the slightest bit of my buddie's .30 Hart.

It is just a Rem 700 with a gray Rem laminated stock that was a .338 RUM. Bobby Hart accurized the rifle and re-barreled it to .30 Hart.

It is amazing how flat shooting that rifle is. Sighted to 2 inches high at 100 yards, you can use a point blank hold to 350 yards.

If I could go back and make my choice again. I'd choose the 300 H&H over the 300WSM.

I'm currently working on two rifle projects, one being a model 70 classic stainless 300 WSM dumped in a compact McMillan Edge stock and, the other being a model 70 classic 300 Ultra Mag dumped in a McMillan Supergrade stock with Edge technology with a 26" #4 fluted pac-nor barrel. Neither one should be too heavy.

A nice sporter contour and no more than 24". Beyond that I hardly see the benefit in terms of added velocity versus handling characteristics.

Add a good Leupold Mk 4, and I'm done.

Regards, Gus

This is now my only .300 Mag and it's an old Remington 721 in .300 H&H and is fantastically accurate and likes the 200 grain SAF.

I restocked it and yes....you can blame me for the funny checkering pattern....I was trying different styles....this one sucks but it's still there!

It's record on Kudu and Gemsbok is perfect!

Took a horrible shooting Ruger M77 in 7mmRM and boxed it up. Sent to HART and they did an action truing and lug lapping.
They then installed a 24" long 30 caliber tube with a chamber that a 300 Win round fits into pretty well.
I already had the action piller bedded so all they had to do is open the chanel and bed the first couple of inches.
It got boxed up and sent back. I put the Burris back on it and ..... well, now I shoot it. Still fire forming cases so I haven't worked up a load yet. Planning on running a 180grn Nosler Accubond to see what I can come up with. Might work with a 200grn Partition too!
(was gonna add a couple of pics but can't get photobucket to come up Frowner )

OK photobucket up for the moment:

I've tried several different 300 mags. The 2 I have settled on is a Kimber Montana .300 WSM and a Rem 700 Stainless DM in .300 Win. The Kimber has a 24" barrel and weighs ~7.5lbs ready to go. I would not want a "bigger" .300 in a rifle this light. The recoil is not all that bad, but the gun has wicked muzzle jump and anything more I would be concerned about getting jacked between the eyes when shooting from awkward field positions (I had to prove to myself the Kimber wouldn't do it in 300 WSM). The 700 weighs closer to 9lbs ready to go, has a 25" barrel with factory muzzle break, and a Mcmillan stock. Not a fan of brakes, but I bought the Rem with plans of swapping out the tube then made the mistake of shooting it.

The 9lbs ready to go 700 w/ 25" tube is about what I think a .300 magnum should look like. I would prefer the Kimber for steep country, but for all around hunting don't mind a bit more weight in a .300. The extra weight helps make the .300 more shootable and also (at least for me) doesn't hurt on longer shots which is where .300s come into their own compared to lighter .30s.

I love my old and I mean old 300 H&H pre war Mod 70 Win. with its 26" tube and custom stock. It has lost most of its blue, and the stock is pretty banged up, but it still shoots little tiny groups and I have had it for about 50 plus years and hunted all over the world with it. It is a special gun to me and I am a known gun whore that will sell any gun. but not this one..at least not yet, and fortunatly no one would want it..I paid $76,?? for it new and stocked it myself. It was my first stocking job and still looks good, other than wear.

In a magnum I want a 26" barrel as I am looking for performance, velocity and long range, I don't want a fwt magnum with a short barrel as that defeats the purpose, I reserve those light rifles to the 06 and 270.

I have found the old 300 H&H when handloaded will out perform most of the 300 cartridges with the heavy bullets of 200 and 220 grains, and equal them with lighter bullets, only the 300 Wby and perhaps the newer magnums on the .404 case will out perform it, but not by a lot.

It is an interesting case to work with and has some assets that may be over looked such as a very tapered case that makes feeding and extraction more positive, and it has its minus side in that cases are claimed to streatch, I have not had that problem to any great extent however.

After shooting it many years I have been totally satisfied with it. Today I shoot the 200 gr. Noslers at very near 3000 FPS, it is the near perfect elk rifle, and a good long range Mule deer rifle and plainsgame rifle.
