Steyr ProHunter plastic safety?

Hi everyone,

I was getting serious about picking up a Pro Hunter today when I noticed the crappy plastic safety for the first time. I found it a real turn-off. It made a positive click when engaged, but was relative quiet when disengaged. For lack of a better term, it felt ... clunky. Is it as crappy as it looks or am I missing something?

Thanks

We have a couple for loaner guns at the ranch...they are accurate, ajustable length of pull and are pretty weather resistant.we have had them for 3-4 years now and no problems...may not be perfect but seem to be trouble free. They have the 20 in barrel...they are 260 rems...

I had one for quite some time. I never completely warmed up to it, but there was no problem with function. It was also one of the most accurate factory rifles I've come across.

I had a number of them. All were tack drivers and the safety very functional with no issues except for 1. On my 300 Win Mag I had to round the edge because under recoil with 200gr Partitions it would bit my thumb. Other than that no issues and I it went to Africa 3x and took a lot of game reliably.

I have one in 7mm-08.

My go to deer rifle since 2001 or so.

No issues with the safety, but shared your concerns early on as well.

Mine is a 3/4 MOA rifle with 139r SSTs.

To each his own........

top to bottom, Steyr Pro, 7mag, Steyr Mountain, 308 Win., Steyr Pro, 376 Steyr.

IMHO, bought right Steyr's are one of the best values going. Ask me how I know.......

I particularly like the mountain rifle. Twenty inch barrel, sub-moa shooter, great trigger.

No fleas on the classics either

I have one in .270. never had a problem. The synthetic stock looks a bit weird but is one of the most comfortable and practical factory stocks I have used.

Owned a Pro M w/synthetic stock in .30-06 back in the mid-80s... Neat guns, but that was before I ever heard of switchbarreling. Also owned a Sako Deluxe AIII back then in .270win. Continued to buy Sakos, never again with a Steyr.

Cycloac mags that crack was one reason. When found out that barrels were press-fit and could not be replaced except in Germany, kind of sealed the deal. Guess could have gunsmith part-off the barrel and then drill out the stub and finally thread the receiver, but... There were other problems anyway.

Had the Steyr bug bad in the early 80s, their 9mm pistol, a .375H&H Safari, the .308win tactical rifle.

Neat, but not for me.

Took my breath away! This is the most beautiful thing I've seen in years, and your photography just complements it. I would be in your debt if you can post more photos of similar hi resolution this half stock rifle shocker
