I ordered a Win. 70 Featherweight in 6.5x55 a while back as a Christmas gift for my 11 yr old son. I was told today that this rifle is no were to be had. Piss me off.
Was wondering what you guys think about the CZ 550FS or 550 American in 6.5X55 for a young hunter??
Thanks

Steve, I'm not familiar with the M70 "Featherlight", so likely this one is not the same, but perhaps it would do??

M70 Featherweight SS 6.5x55

I'd personally stay away from a rifle with a set trigger for a kid. Not only do they present additional safety issues, but learning to shoot with a set trigger makes it difficult to switch to a regular, single stage trigger later. If the CZ could be had without the set trigger, however...

If you'd rather go with Remington I've got a as new Mdl. 700 Classic in 6.5x55 that I purchased new in '94' that I fired less than 100 factory rounds through back when I first purchased it and the rifle as has been a closet / safe queen ever since.....it's in excellent fired condition and comes with the base and rings supplied with the rifle.

I'll sell it for the same listed price as the Winchester linked on Guns America above plus my FFL dealer and shipping fees.

Take look at what the same rifle I have sold for on Auction Arms a week or so ago, I contacted the seller and it had also been fired but like mine very little.....auction # 7106855.

If interested contact me at TCContenderFan@aol.com

I'd go with the CZ American for two reasons: better stock shape for handlimg recoil (important for an 11 yo), and the 6.5x55 needs more than the 20" of barrel the FS gives to preform at its best.
Go with the 24" barrel.

Steve:

According to the Winchester site, they are still making them. I'd check with other sources.

My CZ had the set trigger installed and the other trigger was in a bag along with the tools to do the job. I'm thinking about the CZ FS in 9.3X62 as my own Christmas present. Packy

I bought a CZ 550 in a 6.5x55 for my youngest, He and I like it a lot, but I admit it has a few flaws, as most factory rifles do nowdays. The set trigger bothers no one, it works exactly like a regular trigger until its pushed forward.

Accuracy is excellent, it is just a tad heavy for a 6.5x55, but that makes it have zip recoil. My biggest complaint is the bolt is a little sticky and you will need to slick it up some, which can be done with polishing and abrasives or just spending a lot of time cycling the bolt.

For the money these are excellent rifles and I haven't heard of anyone who has bought one that didn't like them, which says a lot, cause bad press on rifles seems to travel fast.

Steve,
I bought a Winchester Featherweight in 6.5 x 55 18 months ago or so. I have put thirty rounds down it at the range. It shoots decent (5 shot 1 1/2" - 1 3/4"). I was planning on cannibalizing it for the action to build a 9,3 x 64 in a couple of years. If you want it for your boy I would sell it to you for a fair and attractive price. It has Talley bases/rings and a Leupold 4x scope (all new). You could pick any/all/none of those components. It is a nice rifle. I am tall and long of arm, so a full sized Sako fits me better.

Shoot me a PM, and I'll take some pictures this evening. I have CZ rifles and Winchester featherwights both. The Winchester is a nicer rifle, and much more refined. This one has been bedded, and the trigger has been smoothed by a smith who knows what he is doing (George Vais).

I don't care one way or the other about this rifle, but it might be just the ticket for your boy. Money back guarantee, will split shipping if it comes to that.

Thanks for all your help! I got a call from my dealer today and they found a Win 70 Featherweight 6.5x55 in stainless/wood. Still won't get here by Christmas but that's OK, I guess.
With all of the dicking around trying to find a 6.5 Swede I have come to the conclusion that I need to purchase a CZ 550FS in 6.5 for myself. You know, for all my trouble. Sounds right to me.
Thanks Again

That does sound right. Also, take a look at the 9,3 x 62 in the FS. Bye, bye, Mr. Bear.

I purchased a CZ 550 American in 9.3x62 last summer. I am very pleased with my CZ Rifle. Feels good and shoots great, scary accurate.
