I have been using the same 160 gr load for 20+ years, several gr. over the current Hodgen max load for IMR4831 at 3050fps. The current Hodgen online data does not have a single load over 2,950 fps but they are loaded at about 75% of a 280ai's internal pressure. The Alliant book has 2 loads over 3,000 fps.

I get bang on 3000 with a 160 Accubond and 64 grains of 7828. That's about 130 fps faster than Hodgdons claims, but is almost exactly what Nosler prints for velocities with the exact same 64 grain charge. I settled on that load because it shot best there, and it met or exceeded expected velocities and showed zero pressure signs and brass seems too last forever. I actually had that up to 68 grains with what seemed like acceptable pressure but never bothered chronographing it since the accuracy dropped off. Sometimes its easier to load for your gun, then look for a manual that agrees with you. I've never seen a caliber that varies more from rifle to rifle than the 7 Rem Mag. Just be happy that you don't have one that only does 2800ish, because believe me they are out there.

Like Dogleg. I pushed the 160s right at 3000. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

I don't see the advantage of a 160 when the 175 will fly about as fast. From a Ruger #1 with a 26" I was routinely getting 3000 fps from 175's and 2940 fps from a Rem 700 BDL with a 24". Nosler's manual shows 2970 fps for their 175gr Partition in a 24". The powder I used was RL-22. With the same powder, I got 3000 fps from the 175 NP from a 24" 7 Wby. If you're not getting AT LEAST 3050 fps from a 160 in a 24" tube, you're using the wrong powder, or not enough of it! Or, the barrel needs to be scraped. I get a chronographed 3088fps with 160 grain partitions. My load is hefty charge of H-870 lit with a Fed 215 in the Rem. Mag. It was so accurate out of my rifle I bought all of the powder the store had. The 175s do offer a great deal and are my second choice. In fact I have a second 7mm RM and have toyed with the idea of setting it up just to shoot the 175s. I have had it for about 4 years but never shot it so.......

I shoot the 140 grain Barnes and get 3180 fps with 66 grains of H4831SC Frank "I don't know what there is about buffalo that frightens me so.....He looks like he hates you personally. The one i use most of the time, with a 26 inch barrel, doesnt like to go much above 2975 to 3000fps with 160s in warmer weather. I have used 7828 and RL 25 but I like the Winchester 780 for hunting loads. I do use the 7828 and MRP for just target loads. Somebody here once said it is not hard to get a 7 Mag to shoot. It isn't hard to get it to shoot accurately. What is hard is to get it shoot with maximum accuracy at true Magnum velocities. I have seen that before too. Many of them are not as accurate with the absolute maximum velocity. That can and does hold true for other rifles and in other mag calibers too. Like Magnum Hunter ^^ above I have thought about setting up 7Mag # 2 for just 175s. I think there was big thread on this earlier this year too. It may have here, or in Reloading. You might want to have a look at it too.

Just over 3000' with 160AB and RL22. I can easily get 3125 with 71.5g of Retumbo.

In a 26 inch barrel and even a fast 24 inch barrel you should be able to get 3000 FPS with a 175 gr. bullet, at a safe max, In all the ones I've shot, that's been the case, which is about a perfect elk round with a Nosler partition.. I have a 24" Rem 700 in 7 Rem Mag. I've gotten a bit over 3300with 140's and Rel22 and 3000 with 160 Accubonds and Rel25. It's most accurate load was a 150 Ballistic Tip with H4350 at 3100. I use the 160 load now.

Lindy: If you are going to talk on this site about cartridges their merits and velocities, you better have a chronograph to verify what you are talking about. Also, how you gonna know what your particular rifle cartridge is doing, and where to set your sights, if you don't have one. But I bet you already knew this anyhow. Are we talking 7mm Remington Magnum via chronograph?

I do not have a 7mm RM but my 280 AI & 160 gr Accubond gives me the Nosler manual velocity of 3000 fps with N560! I dropped it by 1 grain for better accuracy & still get 2940 fps. I know others who struggle to achieve that with the 7mm RM. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

There are times when I think I would like to push my 7 Rem Mag for more velocity - just because . But when it shoots the 160s good at 2950 fps I can't complain a lot.

It's been said to never chronograph your favorite hunting load. I found that to be true when I chronyed a 30-06 load I had used with great success for years. With a 160, I get between 2900-3000. It's killed everything I've shot at. Aim for the exit hole

Three separate 7mm Rem Mag's get 3000 fps with: 140-gr Sierra / 66.8 grains RL-19 / Fed 215 / OAL 3.2615" Very accurate. F-i-l's recipe verified by ProChrono _______________________
