Hi all,

Just a note to ask about experiences with the Nosler Combined Technology Ballistic Silvertip (what a mouthful) in .270 in 130gr.

Any experiences? Good - Bad?

Also any experiences w/ .270 130gr Speer Hot Core spitzers.

I've used plenty of the Speers in .30-06, but never in .270. In .30 I was totally satisfied from Blesbok to Impala to Wildebeest (although they were getting a wee tad soft for the Wildebeest).

Any comments on the Speers as well.

BTW - I see lots of people here seem to like the Hornady Interlock bullets. My experience with them as opposed to Sierra and Speer in the same calibres - 7mm and .30 is that the Hornady are brittle - in other words they behave like varmint bullets and vaporise, whereas the Speer and Sierra MAY overexpand, but they tend to hold together better.

Any comments?

I have shot mule deer, pronghorn, elk and big horn sheep using Hornady interlock bullets (mostly using a 270)and been completely satisfied.

I have shot lots of hornady interlocks and never experienced any falling apart on game...I do match the velocity and bullet used to the table they have in their manual. The very few interlocks I have recovered are always perfectly expanded mushrooms that weigh 60-75% of the original weight.

Bren,

I have used the 140gr 7mm version of the Nosler CTB in my 7X57.

Good bullet, but on the soft side, though I don't think that they are too soft. I think that they are comparable to Sierra Gamekings, and Speer HotCores. They have performed great on several mule deer and antelope. I have not recovered one, so I can't tell you how they retain weight. Usually, I find a few lead fragments, and that is it.

I would, and do, use them in a standard cartridge, but would not put them in a magnum.

I have only ever shot one elk with a Hornady Interlock. It did the job, broke the onside shoulder, blew into shrapnel and did not exit. One shot, one dead elk. This was a 180 in a 30/06. I moved to partitions and never tried them again.

They tend to be a little soft IMO, but stick one in the rib cage and he won't make many steps, if any...My son in law uses them exclusively as I gave him several boxes and has no complaints..

It damn near impossible to make a .270 fail on deer and pronghorn short of sticking the bullet in a terribly wrong spot.

I've used that exact bullet, about a dozen years ago on a large doe whitetail in northern minnesota.

Deer was running from another party & was pretty worked up. She stopped in the swamp just long enough for me to center up her rib-cage. Range was about 60 yards.

She did run 20ish yards & crashed, but everything was J-E-L-L-O in front of the diaphram, including the on-side shoulder.

Like Ted, I've also read they're a black BT.

Have fun,

friar

Thanks, guys.

Seems they're just moly coated BT's then (with a silver plastic tip).

They can certainly be used to punch paper or used on small animals (chest shots only) where they can blow through. Or foxes, etc that I reall don't want to eat.
