Friend has one of these in new condition, unfired, and only looked at it one time some years ago and appeared at that time to be nice looking "modern" rifle. Can't remember whether it had a Sako or FN mauser action? Anyone aware of these rifles and have an opinion of them they would be willing to share?

I had one years ago in 06 and it shot great. The one I had was on the FN action. I was told the barrels were Douglas and the stocks Fajen. I have also seen them with Sako and Mark X actions. They seem to bring anywhere from $500 to $750 today.

If it's a Model 340, I think they were on Mk.X's.

I had a half dozen of them one time in .30-06 that I got cheap on account of they all had split their stocks. After we re-stocked them, we found that they all shot very well. I wish I'd have kept a couple.

The original stocks were very light, absolutely brittle, and not very well fitted. I had the feeling they were 'over dried' somehow.

The more I think about it, I believe this one is on a MK X action. I recently picked up a very nice piece of English Walnut and that combo would be a nice way to go. For sporting/hunting rifles I am a fan of Douglas barrels so no problem there. Thanks for the info.

If it's a FN action The top of the bolt handle will be ground off & the bottom metal is junk with the magazine release on the outside of the trigger guard.The off bolt side of the reciever is marked FN Made in Belgium

If it's a MKX the top of the bolt handle is round & the bottom metal is the standard early mkx with the magazine release inside the trigger guard.The off side of the reciever is marked Harrington & Richardson.

I assume you know the difference between a Sako & Mauser action. I have several of each type & often hunt with a Sako actioned 30'06..before you restock 1 shoot it off hand they hold very well & are accurate..PM me if you have other questions.

I actually have one of these in a 7x57. I believe it has a crack or split in the stock between the opening for the trigger and the magazine well. Unfortunately I messed up the barrel channel on the stock myself by trying to free float the barrel and taking out too much wood. If split stocks are a problem then I guess I can rid myself of any guilt for not keeping it original. I plan on getting either a Serengeti ARCA or an Accurate Innovations stock.

P.S. The mark X's do say Yugoslavia on them below the wood. However I don't think any Ultras were made out of the Zastava actions. I am pretty sure your choices should be between FN and Sako. If it has a claw extractor it is probably an FN as the Sako will have a push feed bolt with a guide bar. I am fairly certain though that most 300 Ultras were FN made. Don't quote me though as I am no expert and only know what I have read while researching my own model 340.

I spoke with the current owner last eve. and he verified that the action is an FN, not a Zastava MK X action. Stated that it has Belgium proof marks, etc. Either one is fine with me or even the Sako. I am going to use the rifle as an all around shooter for local farm I have access and will attempt to make it a "go to rifle" for all occasions.

I have owned mine for 35 years. It is the FN action in 270. Very nice rifle, shoots well. I have had -0- problems with it.

Sounds good to me, but curious are you using the std. trigger with the rifle or did you replace it?? Glad to hear it shoots well and looking forward to receiving the rifle. Will shoot it some and do some load testing/chrono work and post results.

over the years H&R used several different adjustable triggers on the FN actioned Ultra. If it has plastic parts junk it & put another in if not the original works well.
