I found 8 boxes of unfired WW 30-40 Krag brass in my reloading stuff.

I always wanted a rifle in 30-40. I need one I can mount a scope on.

Single shots work well to.

What rifles should I be looking at.

old custom #1 or #3 Ruger. Kobe did a nice job on a 22 Jet for me.

Winchester 1895. Only the version as done by Browning in the late 80's early 90's. Really well done rifles.

A rifle that I have always wanted, but just can't find for a good price.

There's actually quite a few very nice single shots on GunBroker including beauty by C Sharps.

Not made for a scope, but another cool gun would be the Winchester 1895. Quite a few of those chambered for the Krag.

Here's my .30-40 Krag Winchester Single Shot, metal work by Harry Creighton, stock by Hal Hartley. Inspired by Townsend Whelen's writings about his own .30-40 Winchester Single Shot.

I still have my father's sporterized 30-40 Krag he bought from the NRA or CMP probably in the 1930s, for $4.25 as I recall. It has a receiver sight, and still shoots well to point of aim. I need to take a couple Whitetails with it in his memory.

Uberti makes a hi wall replica in 30-40, I think Cimarron has them.

If you wanted to go cheap maybe a handi rifle in 30-30 could be rechambered?

I'd send a message out to Siam Krag, he has a beautiful .30-40 built on a Siamese Mauser.

I bought an old homestead 1985 30-40 Krag this last summer for $350. It took some horsetrading but I was happy.

I have always enjoyed the look of a sporterized Krag like the one below. If you want find one like that, that would be my vote.

A very good friend of mine has an original 95 in 30/40 that is in great shape although it was rebarreled by P.O. Ackley. Whoever the original owner/owners were no doubt had shot lots of corrosive ammo in it and so it needed the rebarrel job. He got the rifle in the early 70 because he is a Winchester guy and his young son was strongly left handed.
It is a very nice easy shooting rifle. It has the pivoting peep sight on it.

Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

You cant scope a Win 95 unless you want to off set it and that's not a good thing..

What a nice custom Krag, those actions are so smooth but again hard to scope properly..I think your best bet is to rebarrel a Ruger no.1

Personally, I'd hate to spend much money on a 30-40 although its a nice old caliber and I have used it some on deer with success, and seen it used on elk, but there are a bunch of better calibers out there.

I would love to have an original Krag carbine in 30-40 just to play with.
