i have been useing the federal H.E ammunition for ten years or so, when my 06 sported a 26 inch tube i was getting anywhere between 2930-3000 fps depending upon the batch through the O 35P Chronograph
with a 24 inch tube im getting between 2850-2880 fps again depending on the batch
i have pressure tested these in a pressure gun but would need to check on the exact figures
regards daniel

You would lose somewhere around 50 fps per inch. So if with a 24" barrel you get say 2900 fps then with a 22" barrel you would get around
2800 fps.

I have shot them in my 22" barrel and didn't seem lose any velocity..I got an average of 2967 FPS for 10 shot average taking out the high and low velocity shot. It was a hot day of about 98 degrees I suspect...Thats pretty darn close to real velocity from a 300 Win. round.

My only problem is that I don't trust the Hornady bullet at those velocities, I have seen them come apart in a 300 H&H on elk and even deer...they should use a premium bullet, hopefully they will change all that soon.

I just received my 'new' 1949 Winchester m70 30/06 last night. In anticipation I have stockpliled the following ammo to try out:

Federal HE 180 Partition
Federal 180 TSX
Federal 180 Fusion

Plan on running them over the chrony after work today. I'll report results tomorrow.

No 200gr. Partitons in factory so I'll have to put off my walking trip across Africa until I get my reloading supplies together waveing at you Ray.

After mounting the scope and bore sighting and shooting it in at 50 yards, I ran out of daylight. Moved to 100 yards and fired two shots but got no chrony readings. The two shots were touching! Will run em over the chrony this weekend.

The Federal HE 180 grain Nosler Partitions chronograph at 2800fps in my 22" bbl M-70 (stainless classic). This is at 100 ft. above sea level. I have used this load in Africa on plains game (including zebra).

This is a great hunting load for the 30/06

Hey Ray! I wouldn't trust that Hornady bullet at those velocities either. Nor would I trust the Sierra which seems to be in the Federals...... at least the ones that don't have a TBBC!

All velosities from Pre64 M70 24" Barrel:

Fed HE 180 Partition: 6 shots avg. 2953 fps
2" MOA @ 100 yards

Fed Fusion 180: 5 shots avg. 2700 fps
1.5" MOA @ 100 yards

Fed 180 TSX: 8 shots avg. 2750 fps
less than 1" MOA @ 100 yds

1.5 " MOA @ 200 yards

The 180 TSX is pleasant to shoot (nice push-not sharpe at all). I had to clean the barrel with JB Paste and lots of elbow grease to remove the old fowling to get the TSX's to shoot good, as soon as I did the 100yard groups shrank to less than MOA.

Kill 105 lb doe Sunday morning. 160 yards broadside, 180 TSX (Overkill?? Eeker) right through middle of front shoulder. 2" hole in ribs in entry/exit and .50 cent hole in hide on exit side. Bang, backflip, DEAD.

LOL floridabigfish, I will remember not to use my 220 Nosler Partition handloads on whitetails! Ye olde 1966 vintage Mannlicher loves anything 180 grains and heavier. My own experience with the Federal and Hornaday High Energy loads has not been so good. Handloads always beat them out.

According to the Sept\Oct 2003 issue of rifleshooter you lose 18-25fps per inch. I got 2850 in my Pre '64 Model 70 30-06 24" barrel 180gr Partition and 62.0gr of RL-22 which is the book max.

It's a Mauser thing, you wouldn't understand.

As we prepared for our trip to the RSA in '97 a buddy and I tried both the Federal HE Partition and Trophy Bonded 180s in our 22 inch 30'06 M700 rifles. Both loads clocked just over 2900 in both rifles. Regretably neither load shot under three inches at 100 yards from either rifle so we chose other loads. Perhaps they have improved since then... Good hunting.

mb, same experience with the HE Federals out of a pre-garcia and a pre-64 both in '06. But the 180 Fed triple shocks did close to an inch in both rifle. I am happy with that.

I get 2820fps out of my 20.5" barrel 30/06 using the Fed H.E. 180gr Partition load.
The barrel is a older factory 24" barrel that was cut down.
