AtkinsonI think the pre 64 Winchester and the M-98 Mauser are the cream of the crop rifles in the history of rifledom...
The problem with the original M-70 was the high productioh costs, so they went to the post 64 and all went to hell in a handbasket..Then they came out with a new pre 64 and it had potential, but again it had high production costs, and quality control was off and on..The bosses started filling their greedy pockets, the liberals whined until the triggers got terrible, ridiculas safty law suits became a fad and Winchester like most all of the firearms companies fell on hard times. The computer boys, lawyers, officials that only cared about the big bucks took over.
I suspect the M-70 will make another comeback, its design is just too good to die.
Today the cheaper the rifle the easier they are to sell...

mudstudDB,
HOGWASH! The Kimber is not a replacement for the Model 70 and certainly isn't a "clone" of the Model 70 as other posters have suggested in the past. Kimbers are "pretty" and that is about as far as it goes, as far as I'm concerned. A Model 70, a Kimber ain't. A Kimber resembles a Rem 700 with a CRF bolt, if you want to draw comparisons. IMHO, of course!

BuliwyfThe Mauser M98 and the new Winchester Classic are the best of the best. I never thought the day would come when the world was without a M70.
For the M70 to fold is is a tragedy for all riflemen of this world and the next.
