The 7mm-08, I've got three of them.

ted thornI have both...but I don't understand, they are apples to orange's.
They are both short and thats the end of the commons.
I can get around 2800 FPS from my 7-08 with 140 grner's
My .270 WSM will push a 140 nearly 3200 FPS.
They have a totaly different recoil.
But as with almost all cartridges....they are both deer killers.
I can't say either is better or worse. I prefer the 7-08
mainly because mine is in a very light easy to cary Kimber 84M

GeedubyaLike Ted, I own, reload and shoot both.
Having said that, let me ask you........
Why do you ask an apples and oranges question with no qualifiers? Are you "chumming" the waters so to speak. Narrow your question and you might get some intellegent answers.

NakihunterI have a 280 AI and a Kimber 7mm08. The Kimber is my go-to rifle for general hunting. The Sako 280 AI would be gun to use for a guided hunt where I know that long shots are a real possibility.
I agree with the other posts.

BuliwyfHands down the 270 wsm.

Fish30114If you mean that shots of up to 400 yards are on the menu, than the WSM wins for sure. Pushing 2800 FPS with a 7-08 is really at the max, 3200 is EASY for a 270 WSM, I have one running over 3300 with 140 gr bullets, and it is not a max book charge.
As others said, really different cartridges--but hey, maybe that's why you asked!

Jon BeutlerIf the 270 pushes the 140 gr. quite a bit faster, why not use it? Is there a problem with shooting "too fast" at deer sized game?

Yes there is a problem with to fast. When you break 2800 FPS you realy shouldn't be shooting anything but a well built bullet.
I love to shoot a Sierra 140 GK from my 7-08 Kimber 84M but... I moved to bonded bullets in my .270 WSM.
After cleaning a bunch of deer early in my WSM's life I found them full of lead shards and one recoverd bullet jacket with NO lead. These were Winchester power points.
I have since switched to Accubonds and have found 2 of those both scaled in at 65% on the money...just what they advertise.
Yes you can shoot to fast, but with a great bullet....no.

TerryRI would look at this the same way that I look at the 3006 vs 300WM: out to 300 yds the WM will not be any better than the 06 and, if the bullet isn't good enough, it may be not be as good. (Have you ever heard of a 3006 bullet blowing up on impact and not penetrating?) After 300 yds the 300 WM is better. (flatter trajectory and better down range velocity.)
In this case: 7mm08 out to 300yds; 270 WSM beyond 300.
just my $.02, worth what you paid for it.

ar coreyMinimum 7mm IMO.
I would go 7mm WSM or 7mm SAUM.
Winchester makes good brass for the WSM and Remington makes good brass for the SAUM. You can sometimes find either of these calibers cheap on sale.

Yep, I only drag out the 7mm Dakota if I think my shots are going to be longer than 300yds & then only on bigger game than deer. A 280 will shoot almost as flat & kill just as well on deer size game out to 300-350yds. If I hunted elk & deer, then the 270WSM w/ good 150gr bullets would get the nod over a 7-08.

phurley5Personally, I have owned and shot every 7mm known to man. At the moment I own two .270 WSM's and every time I shoot them, they amaze me all over again. I am down to a 7mm STW that the .270 WSM's cannot beat all the time, just sometimes. With the selection of good tough .277 bullets today, the .270 WSM is at a special place, in my opinion. Good shooting.

jeffeossoi love the 7mm .. but wouldn't complain about "having to hunt" with a 270, of any flavor of commerical ammo

WI Hunter270 WSM gets my vote!

2ndtimer270wsm gets my vote, too. If you like the 7mm-08, you can always load the 270wsm down to 7mm-08 ballistics. But you can't load the 7-08 up to the capabilities of the short mag.
Bullets are pretty worthless. All they do is hang around waiting to get loaded.

Wayfaring StrangerHow good are you at doping wind and estimating ranges?
The WSM will make life a little easier for you if you really are shooting out to 400. I shoot rifles with mv's from 2600-3100 ( the 270 wsm included) fps at 300 yds 2x a month. I'll tell ya its a lot easier to score bullseyes in the wind with faster cartridges. Also less holdover helps any uncertainty in range estimation.
IF you're just saying 400 yds cause it may be a one-off case and don't REALLY plan on shooting that far in practice, the 7mm-08 would be a much easier cartridge to shoot and reload. Better case and barrel life, less powder, more bullets choices, less recoil, cheaper factory ammo ect.

If the 270 won't do it the .338 will, if the 338 won't I can't afford the hunt!

Oh yea that too. I load a 130 gr at starting loads for my wife, which pretty much duplicates the 7mm-08. Fantastic medium range deer cartridge. She also took a cow elk with the fully loaded version.
