Just got done shooting my FN .270. Its excelent. It shot the 130 grain Hornady flat bases well enough , but it shot the 140 grain sierra HP Game bullet great ! I put a 3X10 Weaver grand slam on it, And I like the scope real well so far. I plan to work up loads in 130 grain for deer and antilope 140 for caribu and mabye I,ll even try a 150 grain tripple shock if I wanted to take my 270 Elk hunting. Any body have a bad deer bullet story for the 130 grain .270 ? I think I will try the Balistic tip nosler next ...tj3006 freedom1st

Or you could load 130 NPs for everything. Boring but effective!

I haven't used them all, but have used or seen used a fair amount of the standard cup & core types such as Rem Corelocks, Nosler Btip, Sierra, Federal Hi-Shock, etc... and they all worked fine for deer. -Lou

About 20 years ago when the Nosler Ballistic Tips first came out, I busted a West Texas Mule Deer that dressed out at about 215-220 lbs in the left hip when he outran my last rib quartering away shot placement at 30 yards using a super hot 2 grains over book max handload...not a classic Texas heart shot but close..more like shooting 30 yard quail type shot and just proud to have hit him at all...and all I recovered was shrapnel just under the hide of his chest just to the left of his right front shoulder after breaking the left hip and pelvis/spinal connection and blowing up all his internal organs without getting into the gut. Lost surprisinly litle meat from the almost high overhead shot down into the gully he was hiding in but I did not use them again on game and switched to a standard cup and core, Speer and Hornady's or Partitions and never had the same damage no matter where the shot placement was. Today I read where Nosler sez they have thickened the walls of BT's in 30 Cal and larger to prevent this kind of jacket failure.

My son has shot three Alberta Whitetals with his 270 at ranges form 50-150 yards with Hornady (1) and Sierra Gamekings(2) All three bullets came apart inside the animal, I tracked all three a considerable distance. The Hornady at least blew out a rib on the way inthe Sierra's toughed nothing but sinew, hair and lungs and still blew apart. I feel very strongly that Sierra gamekings are only meant for target games, not animals. Terrible performance in both cases. Now he shoots 130 TSX and 140 Accubonds.

I have had 2 almost disasters with NBT's on mulies, both died but it was ugly.. The wounds were like you expect on prairie dogs with less penetration, that is all I will use them on any more, to me a Core-Lokt is a better bullet.

I spent many hours chasing a large whitetail buck in Manitoba when friend's factory loaded Remington bullet blew up on the near shoulder. We did get the deer and examined the first shot (easy to tell -- opposite side of the deer). The bullet and bone fragments were numerous and we had to discard just about the entire left front quarter of the deer. Ugly. He now uses Nosler Partitions for everything. In Remington's defence, I should note that the bullet did hit the heaviest part of the shoulder bone and that the range was pretty close (perhaps 30 yards) so the bullet had not slowed much yet.

My wife and I have taken 40 plus deer and a like number of antelope with either 130gr. FB or 140gr SPBT Hornadys. We have often gotten complete penitration on lung shots out to 400 yds. We have never lost an animal and the only tracking jobs we've ever had were due to poor shot placement on our part. Even then we found and finished the animals within a half mile in open country. As a note: The 140 SPBT seem to give better accuracy in my rifle, Ruger No.1, than the 140 SST. (Sub MOA vs. 1.5 + MOA) The 130gr FB in my wife's No.1 have always shot under 1 MOA at 100yds. For elk we've used 150 Nosler Partitions and the results have been excellent. I shot a couple of small antelope in Africa with my 270 using 150gr Partitions. My PH felt that that load would be fine for most antelope species. Accuracy wise this load has always been around 1.5 MOA out of both our rifles. From my own experience and from the experience of friends and former clients that use a 270 the 150gr. Partition might be the single best bullet choise. If I had to shot just one load that would be it. My loads are: 140gr. Hornady FED 210M WW cases 56gr. IMR-4831 3050 fps (26" bbl.) 130gr.Hornady as above 53gr. IMR-4350 2901 fps (22" bbl.) 150gr. Partition as above 54gr. IMR-4831 3000 fps (26" bbl.) 2800 fps (22" bbl.) I've tried Barnes bullets but found the fowling and accuracy to be unacceptable in the older style, pre TSX. I've never tried the TSX slugs and probably won't since I've had such great success with the Hornady's and Noslers.
