I agree with JBabcock here, if you already have a 30-06 the 338 is the way to go. As far as killing power goes a 300 Weatherby will kill the same at 300yds as your 30-06 will kill at the muzzle (comparing 180gr bullets at 3300 and 2700fps muzzle velocity). A 338 gives you an option of going to significantly heavier bullets. Depending on who you talk too actual effects on game may not be that much different but I do notice that one of our distinguished members (Kutenay) who lives in grizzly country carries the 338 Win mag. If for no other reasons I would choose the 338 over the weatherby if you have a 30-06 for maybe insignificant aspects. One it's a different size bullet variety is the spice of life. Two the 338 works better than the 300Wea in a shorter barrel. Three Elmer loved the 33 bores. In really flat country and for shots over 300yds the 300 Weatherby would be best, otherwise probably the 338. In the end though, both are great find the best rifle deal in either caliber and you'll probably end up satisfied......DJ | ||
