Hello all, Just wanted to get a bit of personal experience with either of these two rifles. Both are .270, with international (full) stock. I like them both. I like the sako cause its a sako. I like the set trigger on the Mann. This gun will be used primarily for mule deer and goats in the rockies.

I am a life long Mannlicher-Schoenauer fanatic, although I do accept SAKOs as well. If you are looking for a significant difference, look for the functioning of the action. Nothing beats a M-S in that category. As for the .270? Well it's an okay cartridge, but I prefer either .3--06 or 6.5x54mm. LLS

For Pete's sake, mortgage the house if you have to but get them both!

I have quite a few sakos and only one MS. The MS is a model 1956 in 30-06 with a set trigger. Full stock, like what you are eyeing. Recoil is horrible for the caliber. That said, it is a killing machine. Probably the best hunting rifle I have ever handled. I would go with the MS. They are pure gold.

The Mannlicher-Schoenauer is a wonderfully classic rifle from the first half of the 20th Century. I would love to own one. However, if your target is mule deer and goats, then you're certainly going to be using a telescopic sight. The Sako was built from the word go for scopes with its integral dovetail receiver and higher comb. The M-S can be adapted to mount a scope, but it can be rather complicated, expensive, and limiting in things like scope positioning and height. If the M-S is an older one with the lower comb, then it works very poorly with anything other than irons. The bottom line is that the M-S is a romantic choice, but the Sako is the more practical.

Mine came equipped with a griffin & howe scope rail and a dandy vintage redfield 1.5-5x. Shoots well but is awful off the bench with recoil.

Strictly from a technical design standpoint, any Mauser type action with a solid receiver bridge is superior to the Mannlicher-Schoenauer design. However, from the standpoint of workmanship, materials, and esthetics, the Mannlicher-Schoenauer is about the finest production bolt-action rifle ever made by anyone anywhere. I have used them in .270 Win. caliber on and off since 1958, and if given a choice, I would select an M/S in the appropriate caliber over any other rifle, period!! The only one I have left is in 7X57mm, pretty much equal to the .270, and it is the very LAST rifle I would part with!! Mounting a scope on a M/S is no problem at all. You mount it on the left side of the receiver. I have used Paul Jaeger, Griffin & Howe, and even Williams mounts on mine. Any decent gunsmith can do this!! "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

I am such a devotee of the Mannlicher-Schoenauer, some might call me a fanatic, but, my .30-06 half stock rifle is a pure killer, so is the near identical .270 WCF. Both rifles are the half stock version of model MCA, produced in the 1960s and stocked for proper scope sights (Redfield, Steyr, G&H, Jaeger, NECG) My old (1919) 6.5x54mm has racked up the greatest kill record beginning back in 1984, Lord knows what its previous record is, and I own a M1952 in .257 Roberts that takes no prisoners, and the same can be said of a 6.5x55mm Model NO. The one thing in common in all these Mannlichers is the quality of the workmanship and the reliability of the function. They just work first time every time, and accuracy with the ammo the rifle likes is equal to that of any custom rifle, meaning some of my rifles will go to sub MOA groupings with the right diet. If you can afford both rifles, buy them, if not, buy the Mannlicher first. Note, that's the .30-06 in the photo. LLS

You can´t go wrong with either one but I´d probably choose the MS -they usually have an excellent balance.

I would opt for the Sako in the .270..but a MS in a 1906 Manlicher is a riflemans dream come true. I get all fuzzy and warm around Brno manlicher mod 22s and MS in the littlel 1906 models..I get just fuzzy around a Ruger RSI, but I like manlichers...
