Just a thought - lots of 30-06 rifles out there - is it possible to rechamber one to a 300 H&H? I'm not looking at any brand rifle in perticular - Ruger, Remington, CZ, Winchester, Weatherby, Etc. Is this possible without cutting open the action? What would you have to do? Lance Lance Larson Studio lancelarsonstudio.com

On a Winchester it could be done. You would need to rechamber the barrel, cut the spacer out of the magazine, install a magnum follower, shorten the ejector and open the bolt face. Others will tell you the loading port needs to be opened but that hasn't been my experience. I own one done on a Wincher M70 that started life as a 7mag and it's one of the slickest feeding rifles I own. Need to change or modify your extractor also.

Fifty years ago it was a very popular conversion on the P-17 Enfield, as well. (And was even more popular - and easier - on the P-14.) My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

Maybe it would be easiest just to rebarrel a 300 Wby Vanguard to a 300 H&H. Just need to run across somebody tired of having the snot kick out of them by their Weatherby. Lance Lance Larson Studio lancelarsonstudio.com

Well the H&H OAL is 3.6" the 300Wby mag is 3.575. The simplest is still a 700 or M70. In the M70 simply rechamber, buy a long mag box or take the spacer out of the back. The get a new bolt stop and ejector for the long magnums. Or simply grind down the ones on the rifle. I have done it either way. I have done the same to make 7stws from 7mags. The loaded round will eject. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

From my testing the gain from a 30-06AI is very little if any. The 300H&H has a 24% capacity increase over the 30-06AI and an almost 29% over the 06, The AI is only 3.7% over the 06. Check the Nosler manual almost no gain from the AI. If the H&H won't fit then think about one of the shorter 30 cal magnums As usual just my $.02 Paul K

I will not begin to question anyones velocity claims. I will only state my own findings. I tested numerous AI over the years several with strain guages using the same barrel before and after. What I found time after time is with an 06 based case "AT THE SAME PRESSURE" you will gain 1% velocity for each 4% powder increase. A 12% velocity gain or around 336fps is on the order of the gain you see from the jump to 300Wby with a 49% increase in capacity and several 1000psi. One key issue I also saw very often was pressure signs that showed up around 65,000 in the parent case didn't show until I was often 7-10,000 higher in the AI. If you are getting that gain at pressures that you and your rifle are comfortable with great. I just never saw it from the small case capacity increase. I have seen a number of people believing all the claims going to the AI only to have little and often no gains in velocity. I have my own case based on a shoulder forward blown out 280 case which gives me 11% capacity over an 06 parent. From 257-358cal compared to the parent I would gain around 75-125FPS at equal pressure, or about 1 for 4. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

If you have a remington action all you will have to do is rechamber and open the bolt face. The magazine is already long enough. Feeding is no problem either.
