I like what the 8mm brings to the table. I've converted a 700 BDL left hand to 8mag. I know it could be partly the stock design but that rifle kicked the bejeezus out of me on the bench. I shoot my 458 Lott(also a Rem 700) without any problem but that 8mag is brutal to the point of distraction (ie flinch). It also uses 80+ grains of powder to get virtually the same velocities that I can get in my 358 Norma with 69 grains with the same weight bullet(225gr.)and barrel length. That said, I've built a Sako in 8x68S which I truly love and I can get within 100fps of the 8mag with less powder, same bullet. For me, it's more "shootable". I'm now looking hard at that new Browning BLR Laminated in 325 WSM. That will make one hell of a winter moose gun. just my .02 Regards, sbsmith

don't be sad scudrunner, the 9,3mm is the new caliber of choice for 2007-8. The ammunition and bullet companies are finding out that it is a near-perfect all around caliber in the 9,3x62 and a 375H&H equivalent in 9,3x64 brennecke. You are going to start seeing lots of 9,3's in the stores this next quarter. Hornady will start loading the 9,3x74R for rugger, and they are looking at the X62 as well. They got to keep introudcing new/old stuff to get people to buy new rifles. regards, Rich DRSS 9,3mm fan

Rich, I think you're being optimistic there, while the 9.3 has a following among the crowd here, I doubt seriously that it will make a significant showing in the U.S even if Hornady makes ammo for it. The 35 Whelen had no appreciable resurgence in popularity when Rem brought out ammo and rifles for it. The 375 Ruger would probably be adopted by the masses first, and I don't see that happening either. DRSS(We Band of Bubba's Div.) N.R.A (Life) T.S.R.A (Life) D.S.C.

I find that hard to belive from a man like you......wanna think it over one more time? Compared to the .300 WinMag/180 grs, it gives the same velocity with 200 grainers and larger diameter, same SD and BC. Compared to the .338 WinMag/200grs, it gives the same velocity with same bullet weight at better SD and BC. With the .338/225grs, it gives higher velosity with the 220 grs bullet with better SD and BC. So it is just as flat as the .300WM, but hits with a heavier punch, it has the same punch as the .338WM, but shoots flatter. It has an edge over the .300 Wea'by, and is just below the .340Wea'by, but compared to theese two, it was offered in cheap rifles with cheap brass. Do you really still not see any gains? Since the 9.3 is on a comeback, maybe there is hope for a great caliber like the 8mm RM.

Caught this thread late but I have few comments. When the cartidge was first announced I thoght "WOW". This was before I bought my 35 Whelen. However, what put me off and I believe this is the reason th 8MM Rem mag never made it was that several of the major gun writers at that time made a big issue of the rounds recoil! I don't remember names but hind sight tells me that the phobia against "MM" calibres was at the root of the rounds demise. Anyone else remember the major gun magazines technical reviews? In politics as in theology! "The heart of the wise inclines to the right, But the heart of the fool to the left." Ecclesiastes 10:2

One thing that may have contributed, I remember an article back in the 80's that John Wooters wrote stating that in his tests he had trouble finding a suitable powder that would give the requisite velocities and consistency for accuracy. I would think IMR-7828 would be great, but it wasn't available then. I think its the fact that it doesn't seem like a useful gain over the 30 calibers. I would like to have one, but wonder what I would do with it, I have a 300 Wby. and a 338WM.???????

Hey Bent, we will all convert over to 8mm when the 30 cal becomes the second most popular caliber in Europe. It is a great cartridge but the market has spoken and I doubt you will change any minds, kind of like things are in your country! You would have an extremely difficult time finding ammo and brass for it, I live in a major Texas city and we can get it, but just barely. You can find 300 mag ammo at any sporting goods or discount store. To each his own! DRSS(We Band of Bubba's Div.) N.R.A (Life) T.S.R.A (Life) D.S.C.

I own an BDL 8mmMag,in a McMillan Mtn.stock.This rifle is extremely accurate,and flattens BC moose on the spot.It is my go-to grizzly rifle as well.I load 220gr Swift A-Frames,at just over 3000fps,and I'm more than happy with my "Big 8"!I wouldn't trade it for a .338,or a .340 Weatherby,and I've shot both!Cheers,Monashee.

Oh, man - I am not debating that! I rebelled at "no gain over existing .300/.338's when it came out". Stories like that burried the round, not its performances. The 8mmRemMag is hardly found in any store in Europe at all, and I am impressed that it is still found in stores in the US. Bent Fossdal Reiso 5685 Uggdal Norway

Hey bent fossdal, I have a 8mm/300win mag I've built, It can push a 180gr nosler bt at 3300fps. How ever, I'm using a 29" barrel and I put the throat out farther. How close is that to the 8mm rem mag? Dave when in rome, punt

Fireball, that is about 100 f/s faster than one could expect from a 8mmRM with 26" barrel, as far as public data goes, and about equal to homeloads. Bent Fossdal Reiso 5685 Uggdal Norway

I think it is true that the market has spoken and it would take a miracle to make any appreciable change in it. But, you never know, if the 9.3 can make a ripple in the next decade (let alone a splash) Remington can reintroduce their round as the ".325 remintion mag." and they'll sell like hot cakes! Right?

ScudRunner, Please explain your view as to why you think the 9,3's are obsolete. We all have an opinion and we should not be shy to express it. After all the world would be a boring place if we all think alike. What are the determinants of being "obsolete"? How does the current surge of interest in the 9,3x62 reconcile with being obsolete? Just curious to know. Warrior

Remington's last chance to breath new life into the big 8 passed when they neglected to find it a home in their Sendero, a platform which would have allowed this calibre to shine. The 338 Ultra will share the same fate.

8mm Rem is the parent case of the .416 rem, and of the STW cartridges... some, like the 7mm STW, were considered too hot at first, now subsumed by the RUMs. Yet, the 8mm Rem is just a 375H&H blown out a little bit and shortened a smidgen; making a .338 STW would have simply duplicated the .340 wby... which it seems the 8mm was supposed to be able to reach, anyway, though it thought it was competing with the .338 win. As a necked-out and slightly shortened .375H&H, the .458 Lott could even be considered a relative of the 8mm Rem at least by similarity of thought... Dan
