Chuck NelsonThe 270 and bull Elk
Even a girl can kill a bull Elk with the 270 Winchester. She prefers it to the 30-06 cause it recoils less.

19 September 2010, 07:43
perryIt recoiled her face off!

LBGuycongrats to the young lady. you both should feel blessed. save the pic and re-post everytime some expert says the 270 isn't suitable for elk.

Hot CoreYou guys sure are gullible!!!

Any of you want to buy a bridge over a Salt Water estuary in West Virginia???

19 September 2010, 17:35
jeffeossoi just never GET this arguement
the norse, especially the swedes, shoot "meese" or european moose, all the time, with the dinky 6.5x55 ... have used the combo for nearly a century
the 6.5 is smaller than the 270, in case capacity, velocity, and diameter .. remember, its a .264
a friend just sent me pics of he and his wife taking a 5x5 and a 5x4 with a pair of factory loaded 7x08s ...
19 September 2010, 18:10
LuckyduckerJeffeosso, a friend of mine has a hunting buddy that shot a bull elk at 883 yards (measured with Leica LRF) with a 7mm08 a few years ago, he had to shoot three rounds to hit him but he expired with one shot.

Chuck NelsonThat's my wife shooting my LH Model 70 270 Win loaded with 130 grain TSX's. The distance was lasered and was farther than close. The bullet entered low in the meaty part of the shoulder (no bone) and exited ahead of the shoulder on the opposite side (also no bone) and he fell on his face immediately without taking a single step.

DeweyThink that I will take my latest P-64 Mod. 70 Fwt. to the West Kootenays of BC, where I was born, raised and taught shooting/hunting, for the new open season on 6pt. and better, next month. I am finding the very rugged country more difficult to traverse at 64 and want a rifle-cartridge that will perform, my load is thr 150 NP at 2900.
Then, in November, I am invited to hunt elk in Saskachewan and will probably use my other two .270s in P-64 Fwts. Since some of the most experienced elk, moose and even grizzly hunters I have known in my 46+ years of BC hunting used only the .270Win. in P-64 Mod 70s and I have always had great results from mine, this is probably what I will go with.
The pix from an experienced hunter like Chuck, who also has years of being a "cowboy" in Alberta elk country, a tough job that will totally "wipe" some soft dude from the urban southeast of the USA, just show what we BC-AB hunters know well, the .270Win. in a Mod. 70 just plain works, always has and will as long as hunting survives.
Good stuff, Chuck, but, if I "arranged" a pic of my lady's face that way, well........you know how RNs can get.........

So does it have to be a Mod 70 for it to work?
Sorry couldn't resist....

Chuck NelsonSounds like a great fall Dewey.

DocChuck, great pic and hunt. Thanks for sharing. BTW, I hate to be extra nosy, but what powder/charge did you use?
In one rifle I have 57.0 Re19 with the 130 TSX and in the one I gave Adam, I think they settled on 58.0 or so grains of H4831SC.

DoublessAmazing what Elmer's "too small" caliber will do with the right projectile, isn't it?
Great bull. I am jealous!

Doc, my load is 59 gr of H4831 in RP brass at 3010 fps. It was the first load I tried and shot so well that I haven't tried anything else.

Modern bullets are amazing. But IME the old 150gr Nolser Partition works just fine on Elk.
Anyone who thinks it won't needs his head examined.
20 September 2010, 01:34
DoublessOnly taken one bull, and that was with a .270 and a 150-grain Speer GS. Bullet came apart inside. Just not constructed heavily enough for the big stuff, I think. Bue you are right. The Partition is just money in the bank. Period.

That is one load I'm going to try for sure.
20 September 2010, 02:13
Antelope SniperChuck, my load is 59gr of H4831 in Winchester Brass. 58gr in Remington brass. These are MAX+ loads, (so work up) and launch the 150gr pills 2950 out of a short 22" barrel.
Mom always shot 57gr of H4831 in Winchester brass. Just that 2 grain difference made a big difference on the recoil for her. We never wounded an elk. Killed everyone we ever shot with those loads.
20 September 2010, 02:18
Chuck NelsonI've heard it is a great Elk round.
20 September 2010, 02:41
DoublessFWIW, the load I used was 58.5 grains of AA 3100 behind the Speer GS but my rifle is throated pretty long, so it gives me a couple more grains of powder room.
And I would bet you can go to the Nosler Partition without changing that powder charge. My experience is that jacketed bullets are pretty well jacketed bullets, if you know what I mean. Not so with monolithic bullets...

umshiniwamWell done to your wife!
That is an impressive animal. What would a bull like that weigh? It looks about the size of a big kudu bull, maybe even bigger.
20 September 2010, 18:03
BradHey Chuck, congrat's to your wife!
Did you re-barrel to 270 from 280 Ai or is this a different rifle?
20 September 2010, 18:46
Terry BlauwkampFinally a scope that is mounted low enough.
Remember, forgivness is easier to get than permission.

Brad, it is a completely different rifle. It is basically the factory barreled action with a cut and crown and Williams bottom metal and extractor. The stock is an Echols EDGE.
20 September 2010, 22:04
k-22hornetNice bull. Congrats to your wife.
That's the performance I've come to expect with Barnes. 270 user here also.
22 September 2010, 00:11
fredj338Great bull! I doubt anyone thinks that a 270 won't kill elk, Jack O proved that decades ago. It's just not waht many of us want to hang are nonres tags on.

LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!
22 September 2010, 18:18
BenditeDespite what Don Laubach says and countless 270 regulars know, 338 is the bare minimum for elk.
I've always used the 150 Partition for deer and elk in the past but this year, I'm gonna give the 140 TSX(58g of H4831sc) a chance.
Nice Bull!

Bendite. I think a good case could be made that the .338 Win is the best elk round, but it is by no means the minimum. It's important to remember that many women and kids are not up to handling a .338 Win Mag. It's better to arm them with something more inline with their capabilities, and a good premium bullet. IMO the minimum for elk is about a 140gr bullet around 2750+, so the .270 Win is IMO about the minimum. Optimum is the .338 Win Mag with a 200-225gr premium bullet. I still like my trusty old .270, but it hasn't been elk hunting with me except as a back-up since I got my .338 Win Mag.
22 September 2010, 23:18
BenditeI'll agree with you on that, .338 gives you all the shot options for just about anywhere you might hunt elk. I hunt in the bushes, 100 yards is a long shot around here. 250-300 yards is my max comfort zone even with a deer so the 270 is more than enough for me. One of these days, I'll cash in my points and go for some trophy horns. I will surely bring something upwards of a 300 win just to be sure I've got the reach.
My point was more sarcasm than anything. At least once a year someone tells me that I shouldn't be hunting elk with a 270...it kinda bugs. It's usually the same person and they feel the .338 is the minimum.
