I have been reading for some time about Berger bullets and how well they shoot and group and have seen some comments about how well they perform on whitetail deer. I want to work up a load for the 155 grain bullet to hunt deer here in south Georgia. I plan to look-up some loads but am interested in experiences you folks might have had with Bergers. A few questions: Do I need to be concerned about seating this bullet on or really close to the lands for hunting purposes? Will this bullet mushroom or fragment or just hold together tightly like a solid? What is an ideal speed for this bullet to travel so that it performs well at ranges up to 250yds max? Ant advice offered will be appreciated. Thanks.

I shoot 95 gr Berger VLD's in my 243 and LOVE THEM!!! Have taken several whitetails and antelope and none have taken more than 2 or 3 steps, most where DRT. All of the bullets that have taken game where complete pass thrus. Lots of internal damage to the organs. The only ones I have recovered where from firing into a earthen bank backstop for sighting in and then only found the jackets. As far as seating depth, I started at the lands and worked back a few thousandths at a time until I found a length my rifle liked. Go to Berger's website and email Walt Berger. He has sent me load data and answered all of my questions about his bullets. Hope this helps.

Those Berger VLDs "fail" on every animal I have ever shot them with. Kudu, Gemsbok, Wildebeest, Axis Deer, Mule Deer, Aoudad, whitetail Deer and feral hog.....may be some others..... The bullets fail but the animal mostly just dies right there. They are great game getters and very accurate, but they do shred.......that long nose just shreds about three or four inches in and the base continues on. Good hunting bullets IME. .

I shot a moose last year with the Berger and the entrance wound was just nasty, got the moose but I didn't care for the bullet performance. Bullet was their hunting round in 140gr 6.5x55 shot right at 110 yards. FS

Thanks for the info. Thank goodness all the animals killed did not know they died at the hands of a "failed' projectile. I look forward to trying them out myself.

I've killed a lot of deer with the 150 hunting VLD in a 270 and I couldn't tell any difference in any dead deer from any other bullet I've used. They just dropped like hit from the hammer of Thor. My strong advice to you, however, is use at least a 168 grain bullet, and preferably the 185. Mine shot well in my 30.06 with Re19, Re22, and H4350 Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my guns

They're designed to fail. Penetrate a bit then blow up the vitals! Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too! Recent college grad, started a company called MK Machining where I'm developing a bullpup rifle chassis system.

they weren't designed that way. they just happen to do that on game animals.
