I would pick the 338 Win myself for a 500 yard shot, however the elk is a fine animal and I serve him with respect and try and do my shooting at 300 yards and under as I have seen too many elk wounded at 400 plus yards..

I might take a 400 yard shot with a rock solid rest and good conditions...I owe the elk that much and I owe it to myself to be a hunter not a shooter...
