I took my new Weatherby Vanguard 338 WM to the range today for the first time. I put a Limbsaver recoil pad on it and a Nikon Monarch 3-10x50. I had a blast! I was just shooting some Federal Fusions for break-in (they were the cheapest) and I did not feel much difference in the recoil from my '06. I had it grouping nicely at 50 yards and decided to move out to 100 for the heck of it. My first shot sent one of the tires used as target backing flying about 6 feet to the right. The guy shooting next to me said, "Man you got way too much gun there!" I started laughing so hard I had to quit. Anyway, I am very impressed and happy with this gun.

Hi P. Jilek,

Sounds like you've got a great shooting gun and had a great time at the range with it. I don't have a .338 Win but I am fortunate enough to own a .300 Win Mag and a .375 H&H.

Your story reminds me of a time long ago when a group of us guys all got together to target practice and "plink". We were busting rocks with .270's, 30-06's, and such and enjoying the nice white "poof" they made when struck by a bullet. I brought out a .300 Win Mag with 180's and the rocks literally exploded, shooting fragments up in the air about 50 feet due to the extra energy. It was very impressive.
