No offence to all of the Rem. 740, 742, and 7400 shooters out there but, some of the Rem. auto's do have a history of being "Junk". In my experiance the short action rifles are much more reliable, with the long action like the 30-06 the Rem autos start to run into trouble. Around here a Remington 742 in 30-06 is called a "Jamb-o-matic" while the 308 has a little more respect. Just my 2 cents.

To all of you who replied, thanks for the advice. It went back to the factory but I must admit that I am not too optomistic that this rifle will be worth the effort. My BAR lightweight 338 is a gem and since the old 742 had worked fine, I assumed that the 7400, when maintained, would work reliably. The principal reason that I bought the Remington was that my wife has long used and likes the 742 and also that is the weathermaster version. Based on what I see now on the internet, buying a 7400 in any version is an iffy proposition. I don't know whether the problem is quality control or bad design or both. I have owned and used a variety of Ruger, Mossberg, Winchester, Browning, and Remington firearms, and have had little trouble with any of them and generally pretty good accuracy as well. Looks like my luck ran out! It will be interesting to see what happens with this one. I'll report back when I hear from Remington.
