Savage has owned the Stevens name for many years and has used it to market many of their standard models in slightly more economical configurations. As example, a Savage might have a walnut stock, while the similar Stevens model might have a hardwood stock.

The .30-30 bolt action you speak of was an economy gun with (I think) a rear-locking action and a detachable box magazine. They were serviceable but plain guns and were also made in .222 Remington, .22 Hornet, and a few in .225 Winchester as I recall. The same gun was probably marketed as a proprietary brand by Sears and maybe Montgomery Ward or Western Auto. The only one I have ever shot was in .30-30 and was somewhat more accurate than a lever action Winchester.

Essentially, the Stevens you enquire about will be the same gun as the Savage, but may have some minor variations from its parent.

No, these actions have a front locking lug (1!!). But they have a bolt handle that often breaks loose from the bolt body, and has to have a screw installed to keep on turning! They were worth what they cost, and worked OK for a guy who hunted once a year! They're no longer made!! [Confused]
