I recently received a new Remington CDL S/S Fluted in 264 Win Mag as a gift.
Using factory loaded 140gr Winchester and Remington 140gr rounds will the rifling burn out rapidly?
Has anyone used the Nosler loaded rounds available through Midway?

All input is greatly appreciated

Welcome to the forum, Ag.

As long as you don't shoot multiple rounds "rapid fire" til the barrel heats up, or use it for prairie dogs on hot summer days, the barrel should last longer than you Smiler

With today's slower burning powders the .264Mag isn't the barrel burner it was back in the day. The same can be said for the .257WBY too. Just use a little common sense when practicing.

If it's hot outside I usually keep a little water with me to pour down the bore between shots so it stay's cool.

Surely you don't believe anyone in their right mind poors water down the barrel of their (its) rifle to cool it down, or for any other reason?

This must be a vulture bobby tomek or vulture flippy idea??????

The Nosler loaded rounds are fine. The rifling will not burn out rapidly.

I've seen P Dog hunters do it quite often.

Thanks ram,

No offensive meant. But, don't poor water down my barrel. I'm guessing, but my mates don't want you pooring water down their barrels either. I've seen varmint jamborees and varmint fields of miles and miles of P dogs. We don't want rain much less a waterboy pooring water down our hot barrels. This must be a Vulture bobby tomek or Vulture flippy idea Confused

I've poured ice water down the barrels of my P'dog rifles.....why not?.....it works fine!

Run a dry mop through it afterwards!

With all the varmint hunters out there, and with all the "tinkering" many of us do, I am suprised no one has "invented" a water cooled varmint rifle.

Kinda like a 1919 .30 Browning Machine Gun.

With modern technology of course. Big Grin

Maybe an old NASA system with Freon... The "new green" [enviro friendly] type of course.

Like the others have said, just don't let it overheat and you'll be fine.

As for the water, I have seen it done a lot. No harm whatsoever.

If you're going to shoot factory loads, then your bank account will burn out far more quickly than your barrel.

Shooting factory loads is also pointless in a rifle like a .264 in that their performance will be far from optimum, running 200-300 fps below potential velocities. I've chronographed a few .264 factory loads and they put the cartridge in the .300 Savage class (140's run as slow as 2750 fps). Don't know about the relatively new and very pricey Nosler ammunition, but who could afford to spend one of those running it through a chrono?

Your .264 barrel will "burn out" (exhibit excessive throat erosion) about as quickly as any other high intensity centerfire rifle barrel. In other words, if used only for game hunting and working up the loads for game hunting, never.

I have a minty P-64 Mod. 70 "Westerner" in a Micky G&H stock, it shoots 140NPs into tiny groups and gives 3250 fps-mv with 63 grs. of IMR-7828. I am fond of this rifle and it is ideal for what little "long-range" hunting we have here in BC.

It has the sts. Win. bbl. and I would defintely pour water down it to cool it in hot summer shooting and it doesn't get anywhere close to as hot here, on average, (thank gawd) as it does where TC1 is shooting. What type of funnel does one use, do you pour from muzzle or is there a rig to do this from an open bolt?

I drill a hole in a 2 liter coke bottle cap and then run a small piece of hose through the cap to the bottom of the bottle. After that I silicone the hose in place. When I go shooting I fill the bottle with cold water. You simply insert the tube into the chamber and squeeze the bottle.

Just kidding, it ain't that bad.
