I picked up a partially bubbaed Enfield a while back for a very good price and was thinking about building it into a low budget sniper style tactical rifle. I could leave it a 30.06, but I already have several of these, and was wondering what my best options might be to increase performance. My first thought was to leave the original barrel but rechamber to 300WM. I am comfortable reaming and opening the bolt face, but it looks like quite a bit of feedrail work would be needed and this part scares me. (maybe a wider magazine too?) What are some ideas for punching this up a bit with minimal outlay of cash, and without getting in over my head? Option 1: Leave it as a 30.06. Got it, already thinking along those lines. If it ain't broke don't fix it... Option 2: 300WM. What might feedrail work cost if I farmed this part out? Option 3: Anything that might up performance without any feedrail work? I thought maybe the taper of the 300H&H might help feeding, but it isn't really in keeping with the tactical "theme" here. (would have been a good option if I decided to build a classic sporter, but I changed my mind) How about no feedrail work and no opening the bolt face, any options there? Option 4: Rebore or Rebarrel. This opens up all kinds of possibilities, but again remember I am trying to keep this fairly low budget. Mainly interested in thoughts/feedback on #2 & 3 above, but I'm open to any ideas. Thanks.

Without any feedrail or bolt face work it limits your options. I tend to use P14s and 17s for the really big stuff and leave the small bores to lesser actions. I think with your constraints, just leave it as is. On another note, I have a 300 H&H barrel for one....

On other rifles That posed the same problem I dropped in single shot followers. The shooting I do does not demand a quick second shot.Maybe yours doesn't either. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Thanks DPCD. Yeah, I may be putting too many constraints on this project... I remember you mentioning the barrel in an earlier "what should I do?" post on this rifle. I was considering it, but the project has taken a different turn. Shoot me a PM if you are interesting in quoting the feedrail work, or let me know if you can recommend anyone that has done a fair number of Enfield conversions and has the formula for making fat cartridges feed.

You didn't say which arsenal it came from. Eddystones are said to be on the brittle side, but I have never seen or heard of one that failed. but assuming it is true, I would leave it as an 06. a Winchester might be worth more restored to mil configuration, but if you have the urge to build something, take full advantage of that action and build something BIG. ever since I was a kid, I have wanted a 404 Jeffrey. I can't even remember where I ever even heard of the cartridge.... I don't need one, and I'll probably never get the opportunity to use one on a DG hunt... but I still want one, and I may build one if I ever find a suitable acion for cheap. consider an of the Big old English rounds for that action... 404 Jef, 416 Rigby, 375 H&H, and other I can't think of at the moment cause i'm in work goofing off.. Frank, it is Remington. (mentioned in the subject line) It has had the ears milled off and the left side recontoured to allow a modified bolt stop and use of an aftermarket 3 position safety/shroud. Earlier I was thinking precisely what you were, an old school safari rifle in a classic style. Not that I need one, but just because... I even had a nice stick of English walnut I was going to use on it, and a nicely done modified bolt handle and La Pour safety I picked up separately in a box of project parts at a local gunshow. I have since sold the bolt, and as I said the project is now going to be a low budget tactical style shooter. Something like this: (except I will probably shape the stock differently and paint it)

There is a guy on another forum who is selling two 338 caliber barrels. One is a Brux and one is an obemeyer(spelling). Both have a 1.350" shank so they would work with the M-1917 or P-14 actions. If I were not going in for surgery tomorrow I would have bought both of them. I have two P-14 actions sitting in a drawer collecting dust. My brother and I have been talking about 338 Lapua rifles for awhile and this is just comes at the wrong time for me.

try a 300 hawk Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I use them for thee 416 Rem. 404 Jefferys and the big 50s like the 505 Gibbs and 500 Jefferys. Big old action, strong as a bank vault, has the best DG safety every IMO, Opening the bolt face and rails for a 300 is very doable, the big bores are tricky but can certainly be done.. They make a wonderful custom rifle IMO..and unlike the std 98 Mauser that stuffs 10 lbs of poop into a 5 lb. bag, the Enfield has plenty of room for the 404 and larger DG cartridges.
