In Rifle Magazine July 2006, there is an article entitled .300s and .338s . The article asserts that at 500 yards, the .300 Win Mag with 200 gr bullets has 1884 ft lbs of retained energy and drops 37 inches with a 200 yard zero. The comparable figures for the .338 Win 210 gr is 1736 ft lbs and 41 inches. 500 yds. .............................................

The difference is even less sitting in your pocket....only a few grains difference. Velocities and energies are the same there as well. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Seems like if you are going to compare calibers and choose a heavy-for-caliber like the 200 gr bullet in the 300 win mag then you should compare it to the heavy-for-caliber 250 gr 338 win mag bullet. I love my 338 win mag and would choose it to Elk hunt, but I have always been able to get more theoretical energy and a flatter trajectory withe the 300 win mag rather than the 338 win mag. Example of my hunting loads which in my guns are close to max: caliber / bullet weight type / powder weight type / MV / BC / 500 yd energy /500 yd drop / 500 yd wind drift / sectional density 300 win mag / 180 gr TSX / 76.5 gr RL22 / 3123 fps / .552 / 2166 fpe / 31.9" / 13.37" / .271 338 win mag / 225 gr TSX / 75.5 gr RL19 / 2835 fps / .482 / 1977 fpe / 42.8" / 18.23" / .281 300 win mag / 200 gr Accubond / 79 gr H1000 / 2950 fps / .588 / 2202 fpe / 36.5" / 13.6" / .301 338 win mag / 250 gr TSX / 75.5 gr RL22 / 2760 fps / .521 / 2186 fpe / 44.3" / 17.3" / .313 If I were going to compare a bullet in the 300 win mag to the 210 gr 338 win mag bullet, it would be the 168 gr TSX. Unfortunately, I haven't shot enough 210 gr 338 bullets to form an opinion. This is my load in the 300 win mag 168 gr: 300 win mag / 168 gr TSX / 75 gr IMR4831 / 3282 fps / .478 / 2052 fpe / 30.7" / 14.8" / .253 All that being said, I would choose to shoot an Elk or Moose with my 338 win mag over the 300 win mag. The only somewhat accurate BC number in the above is the AccuBond number. See Barnes' updated (and finally accurate) BC's HERE. That said, I agree with you:
I've got a small truckload of 250 grain .30 calibers on order as we speak....
